kahlanne
I am thinking of splurging on a family trip for the family as a Christmas gift this year. We can't really afford to fly a family of 8 so it has to be within driving distance from Baton Rouge, LA. By driving distance, I would say under 12 hours as we have made the trip to Disney three times already without problems. We don't want to visit Disney again just yet and while we love theme parks, we are open to anything. I would love for it to be a trip around the end of December/first of January but it honestly could be anytime next year. We have never been to the mountains and snow is unusual here so that would be nice but only one child wants to try to ski. I am sure there is more to a mountain vacation than skiing though. Man I wish I could afford plane tickets and we would visit New York or Washington D.C. Maybe some other year. The kids ages are 4, 6, 9, 14, 16, and 19 but honestly are open to most anything so if you live in states near Louisiana and have a suggestion on a fun vacation, please let me know. TammyS
Not sure if it's in your driving distance or not, but I've always wanted to go to Williamsburg, VA for Christmas.
Stacia
I've heard that St. Louis is an awesome place to visit. (I've never been there.) Atlanta has a lot to see/do for various age ranges. If you want snow, there's even Snow Mountain for tubing/sledding. It's better than no snow at all. Nashville is a pretty place. San Antonio? Asheville? Really nice & maybe a chance of snow.
Shellydon
San Antonio? Has Sea World, Six Flags, Zoo, Riverwalk. Lots of walkable small towns within an hour drive (Gruene, Fredericksburg, Boerne, Kerrville, New Braunfels). One of the largest water parks around -Schlitterbaun and the Alamo and the Missions. Is Tennessee to far? Pretty mountains there.
hellen
I would be tempted to drive just a bit further and go to Chicago. Some closer ideas: San Antonio like others have mentioned. Wait until May or June and tack on a trip to Schlitterbahn which is the best waterpark. Dallas has a very nice botanical garden and science museum. I'm not familiar with the Fort Worth stuff. Actually now that I checked the map I would be tempted to just do DC. It might take two days to drive but it has some appeal. Most of the attractions are free. It will be empty but cold in the winter. It's your dream destination. The extra 4ish hours each way will be worth it. Life is short.
bettyandbob
Gatlinburg? You could do mountains and visit Dollywood if you wanted to do a theme park.
Ottakee
I would be tempted to drive just a bit further and go to Chicago. †******************** I would avoid Chicago in Jan. It can be very cold and windy with snow. Doesn't sound pleasant for doing lots of walking in the city and driving for those not used to it could be dicey
