On line non-Creationist high school Biology for a non-science type student?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I haven't been here for a while.  Hello!

Anyway, I am already thinking ahead to next year.  My 9th grader is slowly working through the second half of Prentice Hall's Physical Science.  She started last year.  We are kinda/sorta using Kolbe's lessons plans.  She is not a math or science person.  She really struggles.  She is a liberal arts girl all the way.  This year she's taking an on line speech class with Homeschool Connections and also an outside class, where homeschoolers meet in a real classroom,  for history.  She likes both of these type classes because she's found she likes the hard deadlines and the interaction with the other kids.  She probably needs to take Biology next year.  The classes being offered around here are Creationist based.  Sorry to be divisive (if I am being that) but even though we are Catholics we really want a secular Biology course.  So the next thing would be to do an on line Biology course.  I am just looking around to see which ones are 1) not too intimidating to a kid who is not science oriented but still provides a solid education 2) has a good teacher who is willing to help a struggling student.  We would love feedback on the following:

Homeschool Connections Biology

Kolbe Biology (is this advanced and hard?)

Well Trained Mind Biology

Oak Meadow Biology

Thank you!

You wrote that she is a "Liberal Arts Girl".  If she is thinking about college/university I suspect that they will require the Biology course on her transcript is very solid and thorough.  My DD is currently enrolled in Biology (she is in 9th grade) and the textbook weighs almost six (6) pounds. There is a CD with Virtual Labs that is also used.   GL with what you decide to go with!

If you enroll in Kolbe the advisor might help you pare the syllabus down to the essentials to make it manageable....if that's permitted in their online courses. Otherwise, it suspect it would be challenging. The book Kolbe uses is used in the honors biology courses at the high school where dh teaches.

We are using the (secular) Miller Levine Biology with the Kolbe syllabus. The syllabus includes some commentary on origins, but they (obviously) line up with Catholic Church teaching, which doesn't not discount current evolutionary theory afaik. I teach evolutionary theory as it stands in the greater scientific community (we are not YEC.). We are Christians, but I too had wanted a secular text.

It has been a great fit here. If you have any questions, let me know:-)
