Explode the Code on iPad

As I understand it, it's just their old computer online thing but adapted for tablets. To which I say, so basically it's for 6 yos who type better on tablets? You know, because everyone can type so quickly on their tablet.  :glare:

Sorry, I've got nothing but bad things to say about that cruddy program and the entire notion of timed typing tests for new readers and elementary schoolers. I couldn't beat that stupid thing. A 30-something bibliophile and it wouldn't give me the highest dragonfly bug whatever reward because it didn't think I could read well enough. I guess it's possible the ipad adaptation made improvements. And, obviously, if you're a fan of the original online version then you can disregard my review.

I agree about the price, but figured with the HSBC deal, it wasn't horrible, if it saved me the cost of workbooks.  I was debating about adding it as a fun computer thing for my 6 year old, but he prefers the ipad to sitting at the comp, so was curious how it worked, glitches, etc.

Thanks for the review Farrah!  I didn't realize it was a timed thing.  I thought it was more like the workbooks, but on the computer/iPad.  :(

It is like the workbooks in many ways. They have the same (or maybe just really similar) pictures and mostly the same activities. However, many of the things that made the workbooks work for us became a problem on the computer. Like, the pictures are sort of good - their weirdness makes kids have to stop and really think (for example, oh, it looks like that's a hat, but hat isn't a word in this section, oh, wait, I know it's cap... that sort of thing, but, you know, much harder sometimes). But when you're suddenly being timed to figure that out, it loses the thinking element. And then that picture comes back up. Since it's such a rough doodle that you're likely seeing several times, kids end up memorizing the picture instead of doing the thinking piece that they do when they see it once or twice in the book. Ditto the writing part. When you're practicing handwriting and spelling out the word, that's all well and good. But for most kids, having to type the word within the time limit (it's really short) is just stressful unless they can touch type. But... what kid learning at this level can already touch type?

But look at some positive reviews too. A lot of people had similar issues to what I had with it ages ago. But some people love it. And, of course, I have no idea what the interface on the iPad is like... if they've worked out the glitches, if they changed anything fundamentally or just adapted it or what.
