hands-on-mama
Hi! We are using GWG level 2 this year. We originally planned to do Saxon but I knew the writing would be a bit much for her daughter. I thought about doing it orally, but my daughter retains better when she has to write. Can anyone tell me what they think of GWG once you get in higher levels? I just want to make sure this program is going to get us ready for middle and high school. If you decided it wasn't enough, what did you use?
Serenade
Well, I used GWG 3 & 4 with my younger son after he bombed the LA portion of a standardized test. We used 3 & 4 over three years total, for 4 - 6 grade, and I was very pleased with the progress I saw. In fact, this year he was able to start in the middle of Rod & Staff English book 5 as part of his HOD program with no trouble. I was surprised by this, because R & S is a more advanced program. My older son did GWG level 6, and I was not as happy with that level -- I feel like it was just a lot of information thrown at a kid rather rapidly without much follow-up explanation in subsequent lessons. However, my older son hadn't had a lot of formal English, so it might just have been him. :-)
katilac
We started at about level 4 (we didn't do a grammar program before then) and went through level 8, both of my kids. It worked great for us. Very open and go, they liked it, it was quick and effective and they retained the information.
hands-on-mama
Thank you! This helps a lot. My 2nd grader is the one in level 2! It just seems so easy that I worry. She does seem to be retaining most of the information though. :)
Hobbes
Also glad to hear the responses! We are using GWG 2 this year and it seems to be sticking well. My daughter enjoys it. I'd love to keep with it, as it is so straightforward, open-and-go. I'm thinking about using it every other year, though. Cathy Duffy suggests this, saying that GWG is a great program, but it repeats a lot. I'm thinking of using it for 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th. This also fits all little more with the BraveWriter concept of hitting grammar less frequently. In the off years we would do more work with copywork and dictation, discussing grammar through that avenue. Just some thoughts I've been 'percolating'. :)
