Ausmumof3
I've had trouble sourcing the well trained mind books for grade 3 chemistry and wondered what everyone has used and found good. I have a boy who is fairly fascinated with it but will want something that involves mixing stuff that goos and fizzes and bangs. He will learn the theory if it's mixed in with some action but I will probably lose him if it is pure theory.
tmstranger
What about NOEO? I've only used their Biology 2, but I think the younger levels look more fun!
cintinative
I have not used it--but they did Inquiry in Action by ACS last year at co-op and it went very well. Every experiment worked as written! It's free too!! http://www.inquiryinaction.org/download/ We used The Elements by Ellen McHenry last year. True to its name, it is more about the Elements than the full study of Chemistry. The nice thing about The Elements for me was that it has games and songs which was perfect for the ages of my kids (2nd and 3rd grade). This is about a half year's worth of material so you would have to supplement to complete the year, or you could do her Atoms curriculum. We also read some of the Basher books (The Periodic Table, Chemistry). We did try Mr. Q's Chemistry (about half the book) and the material was too high for my two (3rd and 2nd grade then), and also we found it boring and slow. I had a lot of trouble with the experiments also. It just bombed for us.
Curlymom
We loved REAL Science Odyssey's Chemistry Level 1. It includes lots and lots of 'experiments' and activities, and everything is presented in a very kid-friendly fashion. http://www.pandiapress.com/chemistry_level1.html
MrsWeasley
My third grader is doing Ellen McHenry's The Elements, and we plan to do Carbon Chemistry late winter/early spring. I think it's a perfect first introduction.
Bratsche
What about NOEO? I've only used their Biology 2, but I think the younger levels look more fun! We did Noeo Chem 1 a couple of years ago - my kids have retained quite a bit of it (1st and 3rd grade). There is a lot of reading but also a lot of hands-on experiments. They hated doing the notebooking, so we only did it once a week or so. I concentrated on the experiments and discussion. We did Physics 2 after that and we're now doing Bio 2. They participated in a science fair last year and were well-prepared. If I can swing the time commitment, I want to use Chem 1 again with my younger ones. (It's not set up to do level 1 at the same time as level 2, but I may try it anyway.)

Tonia
We used the Magic School Bus chemistry lab and followed the directions in The Well-Trained Mind - writing up experiment pages and definitions. We followed up with Ellen McHenry's The Elements after we finished. I shared a summary of our year on my blog - http://thesunnypatch.ca/chemistry-for-elementary-students/
T'smom
We also use REAL Science Odyssey and we enjoy it.
