MrsWeasley
We are just about to wrap up with HWOT kindy. He definitely needs more practice, but the aesthetic of HWOT penmanship is starting to really bother me. Is that a silly reason to switch? Am I alone in thinking that HWOT letter formation seems designed around simplicity at the cost of beauty? Is there a better kindy/first grade handwriting curriculum that is prettier?
arliemaria
I hate HWOT. Right now my son is doing copywork of my selections. I bought Peterson Directed and hope to start that very soon. I've slowly been adding a subject or two every few weeks. They have an app that teaches the muscle memory for each letter.
73349
It's the reason I didn't buy their cursive.... You might as well switch to something more attractive now if you want to. I'm finding that DS did not retain the HWOT instructions for manuscript letter formation anyway. :(
Jackie
My dislike of HWOT font is why I chose not to use it. We've used Getty Dubay italics for manuscript and New American Cursive.
wathe
I agree that it's ugly. But it's perfect for my kids: both lefty boys with fine motor challenges. Anything beautiful is a pipe dream. I'm thrilled with simply efficent and legible. They will eventually develop their own styles as they mature (I hope)

You are definitely not alone, and not liking the writing is a completely legitimate reason to switch! We started off with A Reason for Handwriting and switched to Pentime because it is very inexpensive and I liked the script (I liked ARfH also but it was just pricey imho). Here is an excellent website that enables you to easily compare some common styles.
SevenDaisies
We use HWT from PK to 2nd grade and my kids' manuscript doesn't look like HWT manuscript. They develop their own style. HWT is efficient, logical and as a pp stated, it's great for lefties.

I used to worry about stuff like this when my kids were younger. Now I'm just happy when they write legibly.
