I'm seeing a lot of things about a sudden large influx of middle-eastern refugees who are now causing trouble, mostly in Germany and the Nordic countries, but I'm seeing these links from a very narrow subset of friends, so that made me wonder how true it is.  What's going on over there?  Is there a big problem we're not hearing about here, or are a few incidents being blown out of proportion by anti-Muslim groups?

I have no idea, but given the way you got the info you are wise to seek information from other sources.  Is the information coming from particular articles?  If so, if you post links the savvy ladies here are quite good at researching the subject and clarifying any misinformation.  (Though I would understand if you are reluctant to post links and thus spread the info if it turns out to be false or taken out of proportion/context.)  My experience is that articles from non-primary agenda-driven sources, about subjects which fit neatly into a particular narrative, are often skewed, not well sourced, and inflammatory, even if some of the information has some truth to it.

There are a lot of desperate people.  I don't know what I would do in their shoes.  Here's one article from a decent source about the situation in general:

and here's one about one of the (small number) of violent incidents:

This is exactly it.  The headlines are inflammatory, which doesn't automatically invalidate the article but makes me a little more wary and I don't want to drive traffic there if they're being ridiculous.

My cousin in Germany posts a lot of things in support of the refugees.  Recently she posted this - basically the column on the left tallies attacks against refugees in the first half of 2015 (i would suppose in Germany), and the one on the right tallys Islamist attacks in Germany during the same period:
