DawnM
If you are currently teaching in a PS, preferably secondary, but all welcome. I need some help. I need to write up a 500 word essay/lesson plan using Common Core standards in my application. I left teaching before CC was implemented and am spending a LOT of time trying to find info to self educate in CC so that I can actually write something up! If you are currently teaching in a PS using CC standards, could you PM me and would you be willing to help me in my write up? Disclaimer: Yes, I am applying to work in a PS. I worked in public education for over 16 years. I know I am walking in to CC. I know it is very unpopular and hated on this board. I want to work. I miss working. I really don't want this to turn in to a debate on CC. It is used in our local PSs and I will need to use it. Thank you for understanding. Word Nerd
You probably already know this, but just in case, http://www.corestandards.org is a good starting place for learning about Common Core and to find lists of the standards. Yes, although that is a basic overview, not enough to come up with specific standards to write up a lesson plan. A lot of what I have found it quite vague and theoretical. I need concrete objectives and practical ways to implement those objectives. It is taking a while and honestly, I ended up just modeling a lesson after a lesson already made that I found on a google search. It is the topic I wanted to use, so I just really needed the standards it would use and some buzz words to fly around and make the CC folks happy. Alessandra
Hi, Dawn I am not a ps school, teacher, I do not know how to write a proper lesson plan, but this link might help. It is for Core Knowledge lesson plans. The newer plans seem to be aligned with CC standards. http://www.coreknowledge.org/lesson-plans I have only used the CK classic and the Colorado, lesson plans, so I have not looked at the new ones carefully. The others were decent, hope the new ones are ok too. Good luck!
DawnM
Thanks. I have now written a lesson plan and would love it if a certified teacher who is currently working with CC in the classroom would read it and tell me what he/she thinks or what I need to change. I spent quite a bit of the morning on it. All the sites googling "common core" by itself were just too vague. They want me to write which specific standards I will be using, how I would explain the standards to the students, how I would implement the standards, and then how I could check for understanding. Let me give you an example: They want me to say, "I will be using Common Core Learning Objective TL.5.6-9a" and then list the actual standard. (I made that up by the way, but they are lettered and numbered like that and there are thousands of them!) I ended up just googling a specific topic I wanted to teach and using that lesson plan as a template.
EndOfOrdinary
I use an app to CC every syllabus I create, with all our foriegn language (though these are standardized by a different organization), and every test. Though I am not currently teaching in high school anymore, I do all my husband's CC-ing because it is not the way his brain works. I'm the data/stats/analysis one in the family. He's the humanities guy :). He hates CC everything for his high school classes, so I help out. You can power standard them too if you want to really impress someone with current buzzwords! I use this app: Common Core Standards by MasteryConnect. You can get them in state specific or just the federal. It is first filtered by subject, then specific number, then subset. All verbatum language, nothing vague. Straight up, no frills. Fabulous!

Now on to write the other two essays the district wants for the application. It is ridiculous. One is about Balanced Literacy and the other is about Cultural Competency. I asked one of the current English teachers in the district to help me understand Balanced Literacy and her reply was, "I am not sure. I have never heard of it." UGH!!!!!!!!!!!
