MamaBearTeacher
I am interested in the movie because of the hiking and geography but it got bad/mediocre ratings. I am wondering if I will like it because the film focuses on the relationship between the two men. I tend to prefer chick flicks or a good, meaningful movie. Do you think I will like it? Guest
Have you read the book? I loved the book. The movie looks similar in title only.
plansrme
I liked the book okay but can't see a faithful adaptation making a good movie. I am going to guess that it was not particularly faithful because, in the book, the two guys are not really friends. It is pretty clear that the author does not even like his hiking buddy. VERY clear, actually. He never says anything good about him or professes an undying friendship. I thought it was an odd choice for a movie. Surely there are plenty of books that would make better movies.
Seasider
The book is next up on my reading list and has received rave reviews. I didn't know there was a film. I will definitely read the book first!
Annie G
It's only loosely based on the book. Like, very loosely.g But I still enjoyed the movie. Some parts totally annoyed me but it was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Disclaimer: We see lots of movies so I don't limit myself to 'awesome' flicks. If you rarely go to movies and are looking for a super great movie, this isn't it.

Hikin' Mama
I loved the book, but didn't know it was a movie. Maybe I'll have to watch it now.
JulieA97
I read the book right before seeing the movie. I enjoyed both! Yes they did change some things from the book but movies always do that. Funny movie and gorgeous scenery!
Mama Geek
I watched the movie and then read the book. They were both entertaining, but I did however like the movie better.
Alessandra
I saw it in a theater with large, comfy reclining seats. The parts of the movie that I saw when I was awake were boring. Except for the REI scene and the bossy woman hiker. FWIW, I liked the book.
Laura in CA
I loved the book; I like hiking; I'm from back East but miss all the green now, so I knew I'd like the scenery; & I like Robert Redford from way back :D So, yes, it was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours, but it was only loosely based on the book (which I knew) and was sort of trying too hard to be funny. If I like a movie I often see it several times ("Mr Holmes," "Imitation Game," "Quartet," "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," almost certainly "Suffragette," etc. ... hmmm, those are all British :) ), but once was enough for this one. But I didn't go in with high expectations. Ooh, speaking of British, Emma Thompson had a small part as his wife. :)
Lizzie in Ma
It is one of my all time favorite books so I was looking forward to it. It was entertaining enough but the book was hilarious and the movie wasn't so much. I did love the cast and it was certainly a decent way to spend a couple of hours. But it wasn't great.
