Fashion advice needed: Footless tights with a dress and flats?

I hate regular pantyhose, but I have a pair of tight-like leggings that come to my ankle. The dress is jersey with a a-line skirt that comes to my knees. Tights are black, dress is black and cream.

Would it be a faux pas to wear them together with something like ballet flats. The occasion would be an academic conference, but I think it's fairly casual, like business casual.

I might do tall boots if I can find them in my budget and it would be too cold and I'm too pale to show bare legs.

I can't find a great picture of what I mean. Maybe something like this, but the pattern on my dress is more subtle.

Sounds like you'll be spot on fashion-wise.

I am thrilled to hear that you are attending an academic conference.  Go girl!

We're still crossing fingers as we have to secure funding, but yes, it's a very cool opportunity.

DD has worn this before, so I say go for it.

This helps, thank you. My stylish lately has been college casual.

Are you presenting or attending? Attending I wouldn't think twice. Sounds cute and comfy. If presenting I would go for full tights and more business/less casual shoes. :)

It might depend on the academic field whether this outfit would fly as a presentation outfit. I'd feel OK at a poli sci conference, but not econ, for example.

I love leggings and skirts/dresses as a look.

I do have a personal issue when the dress or skirt clings too much to the leggings, though - your jersey dress sounds like it could. Might be worth a test-drive :)

I would not wear them. I would consider it a faux pas. Sorry.

Also, I understand that I might be alone in this. Nevertheless, I remain unmoved. :-)

You're not alone, Ellie. :D

I don't particularly love it, either. I never see anyone dressed in that kind of outfit, except for the occasional teenager. I think it is a very young, unsophisticated (very casual rather than professional) look but maybe I'm just too old and boring to appreciate it! :)

Well, at DD's most recent conference, that was a common look for the female presenters-but herp conferences are very casual (t-shirts and jeans are common if you're not presenting) and for the most part they were quite young-early to mid 20's at the oldest (one was a new faculty member, the others were all students).

I do like that kind of look and wear it frequently.

I'm always surprised by the things that get controversial and heated on this board.

It's a great look, very versatile and practical plus super cute at any age. I wear it regularly as it fits my lifestyle--I want to look reasonably stylish and put together, but also need to be ready to hop on my bike at a moments notice. It can be easily dressed up or down and is appropriate for any age.

I'm glad you found what you are looking for. I'm sure you'll look fabulous. :)

I don't think a couple of people disagreeing about clothing choices makes for much controversy.  It's just a matter of taste.  :-)

I like the look on others. I couldn't pull it off myself. Too old and round.  :-)

OP, glad you found what you are looking for! Hope you have a great time at the conference.

I think that looks great!

I'm all for dressing for the occasion, and I think that's a great outfit for the conference you described.

In any case, even if you find yourself over- or under-dressed, remember it's all in how you carry yourself - great posture, confident walk and a smile will help you pull any look off in any situation!

I don't think it is at all controversial, and I'm not seeing any posts that are "heated," either.

It may be your opinion that it is a great look and is super-cute at any age, but some of us don't share that opinion. I'm not sure why you are so certain that you are right and we are wrong. It is simply a matter of taste.

Maybe it is a perfect look for you -- you are probably a lot younger and more casual than I am -- but please believe me when I tell you that it would not be a perfect look for me. I would look and feel ridiculous, as it would feel like a very immature look for someone my age. It is definitely not something my friends (ages 40's to 70's) would wear. Maybe it's a regional thing or something because it's not a look I see very often, although I know it is popular elsewhere.

But I definitely don't see this thread as being heated or controversial. Wear whatever you like, and others will do the same. :)

yeah, I don't care that people disagree, that's not controversial, it's a given on this board. That's why I asked.

I won't be presenting if we get to go, just attending. I'll obviously double check dress code with my advisor before packing.

There is a fine line of perception with dressing. I'm an older undergrad, like I have lots of grey hair, so I may want to project something a bit younger to match the fact I'm still at the beginning of learning this field. It's a subtle distinction and I would definitely feel more comfortable without full pantyhose for sure.

I'm going to look for some shorter boots today too. I spent much less than I had planned on the flats anyway.

You are right. When stating an opinion, I will be certain to preface it as such.

Thus, in my opinion, it's a super cute look. :)

Sounds good to me :) -- and I was thinking about it, and if you ride a bike often, it is probably a very good fashion choice for you because you get the look of a cute dress without flashing the neighbors. ;) I'm usually in the car so my outfits don't have to pass the bike test. :D

I love your attitude and reasoning. Have fun finishing out the shopping, and enjoy the conference!

EL, I just returned from a lecture at a local university (it was given by a Great Courses astronomy superstar!  Ds and I got to meet him!).  Anyway, two women took turns translating to sign language for the audience.  One of them was probably in her 50s.  She wore an outfit very similar to what you described, and she looked great!  Instead of flats she had the most gorgeous red suede boots!!!  I think that with black leggings, dresses like that look great; whether it's with flats, short boots, or knee length boots, and yes, on older women.

I live in a place where everyone cycles everywhere, and it is a popular look for all ages.

Controversial or not, I wouldn't wear foot les tights with any footwear that would show the bottom edge of them. It may be cute to some but it is not at all sophisticated, IMO. Have you

tried JustFab.com for boots? They're very inexpensive and have good deals for first time orders. Just a thought....

I just got home, the outfit worked for the occasion. I'll have to see if the picture I took will work here, don't have time this evening. The attire for women ran from jeans and sweaters to suits. My look worked for the time and $ I had to put together an outfit as well.

I did try to find tall boots, and I really have to try them on. The ones in my price range just looked very cheap. I want to invest into a nice pair of real leather boots as my last pair of cheap tall boots only lasted two seasons and were not that comfortable.

The conference itself was excellent (positively an understatement) and opened up so many possibilities.
