displace
So I was joking with DH we should cruise around Hawaii. I wasn't really serious but DH is kind of really considering it. It will likely be cost prohibitive but I thought I'd play fair and do some minor research into it. It seems like a lot of cruises are one way so then we'd need plane tickets to/from different locations as well. And then we'd be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with two young kids for a number of days. And it seems like the actual time in Hawaii would be short in comparison to the trip. Idk, any thoughts or experiences? I'm mostly just daydreaming at this point and not ready for in depth research. Just starter knowledge. AK_Mom4
Before we settled on going to the Caribbean in January for our 25th anniversary, we looked at doing this 7-day island hopper cruise on Norwegian that starts and ends in Honolulu http://www.ncl.com/cruises/7-day-hawaii-round-trip-honolulu-PRIDE_AMER7HNLOGGITOKOANWKHNL?destinations=Hawaii_Cruises&numberOfGuests=4294915774&state=null&&itineraryCode=PRIDE_AMER7HNLOGGITOKOANWKHNL I know tons of people here who do a vacation in Hawaii each year. It's very popular (only 5 hours away!). I've been to Oahu twice and did the touristy stuff. If I go again, I will find a beach hotel on Maui and just turn into a sponge for a week.
Paz
We are going September 2016 on Royal Caribbean and are super excited! I am just beginning to do research about what to do on each island. We leave from Vancouver, are at sea for 5 days, then tour the islands and end up in Honolulu. I have a few books that should help with planning.

We did this exact cruise on Royal Caribbean 17 years ago for our honeymoon! It was magical. We did several excursions including snorkelling on a coral reef, swimming with sea turtles, and a helicopter ride over a volcano. It is the only vacation we've ever taken, so I'm glad we made the most of it. Have a wonderful time!
Kel & the Kids
We did the Norwegian island hopper cruise a few years back. Outside of the boat being way too air conditioned for my liking, and it actually being quite wavy ( a few lost their lunches) we enjoyed it. A super way to see a lot of the islands that would otherwise be too expensive. We flew to and from Honolulu rather than sailing from the mainland, not being fans of open ocean travel!
creekland
I prefer going and staying to cruises pretty much anywhere we visit, but we're travelers who like to spend longer at places we go. Tours from cruises come to an attraction, stay a little while, then leave. The attractions are crowded when they're there too. We'd never get the full visit we personally like if we were on their schedule. In HI, the time at each island is incredibly short by our standards. If I had a week, I'd want to spend it on one island - seeing multiple things there and just enjoying ourselves doing it. Kauai and the Big Island are our favorites. Kauai is simply spectacular - definitely the Garden Island - mountains, waterfalls, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific and beauty all around. The Big Island has awesome dive spots (and mantas!) and the volcano + true black sand beaches, etc. YMMV
displace
Yes, I think I'd probably prefer just going there if we were to go. The flight costs alone are so expensive. Maybe in a few years. :) Thanks for the thoughts!
