1GirlTwinBoys
What type of test did they do? I know with my husband they did a blood test and it came back negative but I had him go GF 100% anyway and he noticed a huge difference within 3 days and it continued to get better. I'm just not sure if I should test her or just go ahead and keep her diet GF and see if I notice a difference.
snickerplum
I have a friend who removed gluten from her daughter's diet and she no longer struggled with digestion. The test said she didn't need to eliminate. Tests can be fickle, but you know what you see and experience.
RubberChickenGirl2
It's been 20 years, but I think I had the anti-gliadin antibody but I am not sure if they have false positives. I did have the gold standard endoscopy, but you are put under for it and it would be expensice if uninsured. The proof is in the putting. If your child has overt symptoms like D (loose stools) and they go away, I'd go with it.
Butter
My daughter had the blood test and it was positive. When she was first put on the diet, the doctor said if she saw results even if the blood test was to come back negative to continue gluten free anyway. pehp
My son had the blood test and it was negative. But when we removed gluten from his diet he changed dramatically (speech issues, behavior issues, tummy troubles, sleeping through the night). So, that was proof enough for us to be invested in keeping him GF!! It has been so worthwhile for him.
JenneinCA
He had several blood tests and then an endoscopy. The blood tests said that celiac was possible. The endoscopy said that it was not likely. A negative result on an endoscopy is not guaranteed to be accurate because the biopsy could have just picked a spot that did not have damage. But a positive endoscopy means you definitely do have damage and that means you do have celiac disease.
Plateau Mama
Both my kids had an intolerance test at the naturopath. It tests for intolerances & allergies to 100 different foods. One tested intolerant to wheat (not gluten, wheat), the other tested intolerant to all gluten grains (and a bunch of other things). The test is typically done with a naturopath, most allergists won't do the test and think intolerances are bunk. I'm waiting on the results of my test. Crimson Wife
My little one was tested twice, the 2nd time with an extended panel. Both times it came back negative but when we removed gluten from her diet she went from being off-the-charts small to normal petite (like the rest of the family). The stool test is supposed to be a bit more accurate than the blood panel, but it's a lot of money: https://www.enterolab.com/staticpages/testinfo.aspx
Junie
I had a skin prick test first. I was being tested for other food allergies and was surprised to find out that I'm allergic to wheat. I had blood work which was "inconclusive". I wish that I had had an endoscopy done before I went gluten-free. It wouldn't change my diet (I'm gluten-free anyway), but it would let me know whether my dc are at higher risk for celiac.
kiwik
ds8 had a blood test that was negative. The doctor said try anyway. Within 48 hours he had formed stools consistently for the first time [he was nearly 4} and his colour was better. He is not entirely gluten free more just very low gluten. He seems to be tolerating occasional slip ups better now though so in a few years we may introduce a little more in a few years.
Jkacz
DS7 was tested using a blood test but it came back negative. After continued stomach issues, he went gluten free and we started seeing improvement within a couple days. It's now been a month and a half and the child hasn't had a stomach issue since.
