Thank you for calling

I sometimes say "thanks for calling" when someone calls me. Not always; I guess it depends on the call. But, sure, I might say it for personal calls.  I am in the older generation now though, age 59.  To me it's about the same as saying "thanks for coming over" or "thanks for having us over" or similar.

Doesn't mean not saying it is impolite!

I say "thanks for calling" at the end of the conversation when someone calls to check up on me or just to chat. It's meant as a short version of "glad you were thinking of me and took time out of your day to see how things are going in my life."

ETA: I'm not THAT old, maybe even on the young side for the hive.

2nd edit: a barbarian is the last picture I would have in my mind if I imagined meeting you IRL. I am certain you are polite on the phone.

My 73 yo MIL says that, too. I don't like it. It makes it sound like she thinks that I think it's a chore to call her and she has to give me special thanks for doing an unsavory task.

But now, I'm guessing it's just what she was taught is the polite thing to say.

Interesting.

I say it too, and that is exactly what I mean.

I don't find it barbaric not to say it, though. It's just how I grew up. How funny. I never even gave it a second thought.

ETA: I'm only 38!

I just got off the phone with my 90 year old mom. She always says "thank you for calling" before saying good-bye. Is this normal telephone etiquette for personal calls? Is it something generational? Are my friends and I barbarians for simply saying, "Talk to you soon. Bye!"

My Germany mother does this on occasions, as well.

My 85 yr old Gma says it when I call. She will say "Thank you for calling, and you call me again ok." She has two grand daughters. Until last year I was 1500 miles away and the other was 20. She heard from me more than she heard from or saw my cousin, so I think she says it because she appreciates that I make the effort.

If it's a personal call, and they called me, I almost always say it. And I'm more than 50 years younger than your mom. Since I've always done it, I never really thought about why, but I guess it's because I appreciate that they thought of me, and I'd appreciate it if they thought to call again.

Me too.  I am terrible about calling people, though I enjoy chatting with them if they call me.

I'm 38, so I don't think it's generational.  I haven't noticed whether people say it to me when I call (because I really am terrible about making calls).

I'm 39. I always say thanks for calling and/or thanks for listening. I don't know. I'm just glad that my friends and family call and are willing to listen to me yammer. I don't get many calls, and there's only one person I call just to talk.
