cintinative
My DS10 has read Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Prydain. We have read The Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia aloud, as well as Five Children and It and the Princess and the Goblin. So, given the reading "history" do you think Redwall is a good series for him to read? I have not read it so I am mainly wanting to make sure there isn't any age-inappropriate content. TIA! Guest
Do you know about common sense media? I'm sure others can actually help you with your question, but I thought you might be interested in this.
regentrude
Redwall is suitable for much younger kids than Harry Potter or LotR! Mine loved it in 3rd grade. Nothing inappropriate. Just cute.

SilverMoon
I agree with Regentrude. Redwall is fabulous for that age. :001_smile:

Mrs. A
We did Redwall before LotR and we haven't done Harry Potter yet. I'm sure he'll enjoy them. They're fun! :)
xixstar
My oldest loved Redwall abd also started it before Harry Potter. They were still reading it into later teen years too -- seems to be an endless series of books.
...................
My kids are into all those books and they absolutely adore Redwall. Now, I will tell yo uthe first book, the first few chapters are maybe a little slow. But once you love the characters they are so real. My daughter played Redwall for an ENTIRE year, bought Calico Critters for every single Redwall Character, we had a Redwall-themed homeschool day, my son read about half the books as well... She made Redwall Costumes, did Redwall drawings, and bought the Redwall Cookbook and made almost all the recipes (whcih by the way are beyond delicious from a pure culinary standpoint...and of course there's the fact that the cookbook references the story and has wonderful illustrations...) We all watched the movie series together and then she re-watched them by herself and then with every babysitter who would sit through them with her. :) Redwall comprised like 1/10th of my daughter's entire childhood experience.... It's awesome.
4Kiddos
My 7 year old is reading Redwall and Five Children and It now. I read one of the Redwall (Mariel of Redwall) because my son liked it so much and thought I would enjoy it. I did! So fun! and bought the Redwall Cookbook and made almost all the recipes (whcih by the way are beyond delicious from a pure culinary standpoint...and of course there's the fact that the cookbook references the story and has wonderful illustrations...) Oh goodness! Thank you for this. I must find this cookbook right away. :)

ScoutTN
Dd loves Redwall! That cookbook is going on my Amazon list for her for Christmas. My kids love the audiobooks too.
KSinNS
My kids did not love Redwall (but love Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and such). That being said, there was nothing inappropriate, and I quite liked them. T said she didn't like the animal thing. S found the language a bit hard to follow-not really sure why.
abcmommy
We really loved Redwall and read it to oldest when he was pretty young. Maybe 7ish. The cookbook is a must because those animals eat delicious things all the time and the books make you HUNGRY. LOL
cintinative
I'm going to pick up Redwall today! =) I hope he likes it! And I might have to look up that cookbook on the library's site.
knittingout
I didn't know there was a cookbook, I think I will add it to the Christmas list for my daughter. The audio recording of Redwall is also very good, it is narrated wonderfully by the author.
Kathleen.
I love books with animals. I thought I would love "Redwall" since I collected most of Brian Jaques' books. I was so excited to read this book. I happened to find the audio at our library read by the author - all the voices are superb. We listened to it and the story just seemed to drag. It picked up in the middle and did get better towards the end. I think it was too much battle for us. Maybe reading the book might be better, I hardly do audio books. As for anything inappropriate - there is one character that is very faintly lewd in a few scenes, but nothing a child would pick up on. maize
There are also many recipes on the Redwall Kitchen website: http://www.redwall.net/kitchen/ The website was created back in the early ages of the Internet and hasn't been updated in years, but the recipes are still there.
TrixieB
Dd loves Redwall! That cookbook is going on my Amazon list for her for Christmas. My kids love the audiobooks too. Last week my teens were reminiscing about the Redwall audiobooks and how much they loved the full cast of characters aspect. They still have all the books, the autographed cookbook, the model paper castle, and a collection of small plush rodents which was some sort of alternate-universe Redwall population.
