Cat litter?

I bought the Arm & Hammer Clump and Seal litter because it was so highly rated.

http://www.amazon.com/Arm-Hammer-Clumping-Litter-28-Pound/dp/B00HJJUS1Q/ref=sr_1_6?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1444220092&sr=1-6&keywords=cat+litter

Now, I can't smell cat poo, that's true, but I sure can smell the litter!  Granted, I'm pretty sensitive to smells but is there anything I can do to minimize cat litter odor?  The girls clean the litter box daily.  Suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

We use an open litter box because my huge 20 lb kitty bumps his head on litter covers then refuses to use the litter box. Divo!

We use wheat litter because it seems to scatter all over the house a little less than other types. I detest litter box odour and change the litter daily. :o

I have heard that the arm and hammer is great but so strong smelling that people cannot stand to use it. :zombie:

Ixnay on the covered boxes; wish I could quote a few relevant sentences from this link, but I'm not going to risk it because of the problems Susan has had with copyright trolls:

so just think about the analogy of a port-a-potty in a sunny location at an large outdoor music festival.

We gave up on the clumping litter a couple of cats ago; too much money and "digging for buried treasure" just isn't how I want to spend my time; I'd rather be snuggling up on the couch with a purring ball of cuddly fur, playing fetch with bouncy balls, or "cat fishing" with a feather on a stick.

My sensitive little guy likes the fragrance-free Jonny Cat and it's cheap enough that I can toss two large bags of it in the shopping cart and do a complete change twice a week. Sometimes my adult kid gets Tidy Cat instead, and that also comes in fragrance-free but Purina is a subsidiary of the Nestle corporation and I'm guessing that you aren't any more of a fan of them than I am.

HTH

eta: Kitties are more sensitive to smells than we humans are; I don't think the litter box smells after 3 days with only one cat, but our cat does and it's not that much trouble to empty it into a garbage bag, rinse the box, and refill it with a few cents worth of fresh litter.

We used several different brands of kitty litter over the years, and the wheat litter was our all-time favorite.

If you want litter you can find at the average big box retailer, the Arm and Hammer you bought is the best you can get, imo. With Tidy Cats the litter itself doesn't seem to have as much of a fragrance, but when you try to scoop it the clumps fall apart and within a couple days the whole litter box reeks like cat pee. Don't even bother trying Fresh Step. The dust and fragrance is unbearable. We tried it around a year ago, and I had to take it back to the store and get a refund. It stuck to my cats' fur and made them sick when they groomed themselves. Just a nightmare.

We have two boxes (because four cats. ;)). One covered for the cats who will use it, one uncovered for the cats who won't. The uncovered box has more of an odor, but like I said, not all the cats will use the covered one. And some cats will hang their little butts over the side while they pee, so until you get to know your cat better (and really, even then) check the floor around the box for pee stains. And probably keep a bottle of Nature's Miracle on hand just in case.

The general belief is that humans love covered litter boxes but cats . . . not so much.  I don't use them, and won't.  My cats have always been 100 percent reliable about using the box, so I'm sure not going to do anything to muck it up.

I've used the Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, but I get the kind for multi cats, not the Fresh Scent.  I don't think the multi cat smells very much.  I can smell it just a little when I dump it into the litter box, but it's nowhere near overpowering to me.  I do really like the litter.  I'm a big fan of Dr Elsey's Precious Cat, but the Clump & Seal is convenient to pick up just about anywhere.

Maybe mixing a little baking soda in with the litter you have would help reduce the smell?

I prefer the Breeze system with the rock like pellets. They tend to scatter less and when they do, it's easy to pick up and put back in the box. If you do it daily, it shouldn't get too bad. My fatty refuses to use covered boxes or boxes with a high side on the entrance. He can jump but he won't for that.

The poop still stinks, but I remove it right away so it's just my signal to scoop. The pee doesn't smell. I switch out the litter every month or so.

We use Tidy cats plus baking soda and change once a week.  I'd say we have semi-open.  Our boxes are Rubbermaid containers with big holes cut in the lids.  The cats jump in and out from the top, but the hole is big enough for them to stick their heads out while they do the business.  DH doesn't like the wheat and pine type litters.

I used to use Precious Cat ultra clumping....until my medium hair cat had a very unfortunate litter box accident with it.  He tipped the water bowl, then tipped over the litter box.  It was a complete mess and all over him, the vet had never seen anything like it, and it wouldn't come off of anything.  I had to crush the litter clumps out of his fur after it dried for a week.  Its been three years and the litter is still stuck to the bottom of the crate where this happened.

I too like Precious Cat as it's not as dusty as other brands. I order it from Amazon and it's delivered right to my door.

I have used almost all types of litter out there. Clumping, non-clumping, pine, newspaper pellets, crystal pellets, and corn. I even had that expensive automatic cleaning litter box. Forgot the name. That thing stank up the whole house during a cleaning cycle. Think "cooked poop soup".  I haven't used the wheat stuff cause wheat is no way no how allowed in the house for health reasons. However, I am now using the walnut shell litter. Really like it. I think it's a keeper. I do still smell kitty poop right after they have gone, but the same can be said for humans when they just walk out of the bathroom even though they have flushed the toilet. The walnut litter tracks like all clumping litter, but I'm working on finding a carpet to cut back on it. I just vacuum the area daily. I will say that my cat with white paws will have brown tinted paws for a bit.

So I say give the walnut litter a try. Again, I can't compare it to the wheat litter. If you can have wheat in your house then maybe try that one and the walnut one and see which you like best.

That Arm & Hammer has different scents.  Our store was out of the scent we usually choose last time so I brought home a different one and holy-heck does it stink like too strong perfume.

Try a different scent or their unscented version if you can find it.

If not, the turquoise Tidy Cat CLUMPING is the next best thing.

If you have smaller cats and can get a cat litter box with a cover that also includes charcoal filters the odor issue really, really, really drops down, regardless of the litter you use...as long as it gets changed regularly.

If you have larger cats the covered litter box may not be popular or even usable for your cat.

We actually use a Cat Genie for our indoor cats, but we pulled the lid off because one of our cats is huge and didn't fit.  It is pricier but DH insisted on this because he hates cat litter.  The "litter" is actually pellets that are washed by the machine.  Keeps the odor way down and the clean up is easy...but some cats refuse to use it.  You have to introduce it slowly.  Still, the cost can add up unless you can make your own cleaning fluid (we do).
