after singapore?

My kids are working through Singapore 4a - Standards Edition right now.  I expect to continue with Singapore through 6.

My son and one daughter are very mathy, and the other two daughters are not so mathy, but are hanging with Singapore.

I know that's still a ways out, but what is the best option after Singapore 6?

Is Singapore 6 pre-algebra?  Or do I need to run through a pre-algebra program before launching into the upper levels of math?

"Is Singapore 6 pre-algebra?"

no.

"do I need to run through a pre-algebra program before launching into the upper levels of math?"

IME, yes.

FWIW, we've skipped SM6 and went straight to AoPS PreAlg - the ratio of new vs review seemed, at least to us, to be getting too low by the end.

We got started with SM6A, realized it was mostly review, then went on to Art of Problem Solving, which is very diffferent than Singapore Math.

If your child is strong in math, then I would recommend skipping SM6 and going on to prealgebra. We looked at Dimensions Mathematics 7A, and it looks good, but seems to have a lot more text on each page than Primary Mathematics. I love how Primary Mathematics has uncluttered pages, so maybe that's just my own personal grump than a true criticism.

I think it depends on what pre-algebra you intend to use after Singapore. I don't necessarily think AoPS is the right style for my older ds, at least not yet, and maybe not at all. Singapore 5 is pretty strong. It looks to me like ds will breeze through most of Derek Owens pre-algebra and I doubt he will need Singapore 6 at all.

We used the Standards Edition through 6B.  I do not feel level 6 covered Pre-Algebra, however I also don't feel it was mostly review.  Maybe the Standards Edition is different from the others.  Then, my dds used Singapore's Discovering/Dimensions Math levels 7-8 (my older also continued to level 3 after that).  If you are comfortable teaching math and like Singapore's approach, it makes sense to continue with levels 7-8.  They are very good.  If not, then a different pre-A program of your choice.  My dds used AoPS Pre-A as a supplement and liked it very much.

The standards edition is different because it is aligned with the California content standards for math, so when the text was rearranged, concepts were introduced in a different order with less review between the elementary and middle grades. With the Standards Edition, and the new Common Core Edition, I think 6A is needed.

My older is solid on math but no superstar and she will be moving to DMCC 7A/B after Standards 5A/B for pre-A.

Standards 6A/B is not a full pre-A course but, as I understand it, it wasn't intended to be. It's a year-long review/solidification of grades 1-5 for those who need it (with a few extensions).

Dimensions Math 7 CC, on the other hand, is a pre-A course and picks up right where Standards edition 5B leaves off. The pages are a little busier than Standards but, I think, it provides a nice transition from elementary books to full-on high school texts.

There are obviously lots of pre-A options but I want to stick with what's working for DD.

Just wanted to post the scope and sequence so folks could make a direct comparison.

Comparing U.S. and Standards https://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/SSUSandSTD2009.pdf

Comparing U.S., Standards, and Common Core http://www.singaporemath.com/v/PMSS_comparison.pdf

  • The U.S. edition doesn't have as much fraction work as the standards or Common Core editions.
  • The Standards and U.S. editions lack the data and probability work in the Common Core version.
  • The Common Core and U.S. editions lack the algebra focus of the Standards edition.

Pick your poison.

You can also look at the secondary mathematics scope and sequence https://www.singaporemath.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/sssecmath2015.pdf to see how the 6th grade versions of primary math align.

From what I recall, Dimensions Math level 7 overlaps somewhat with the Standards level 6, with level 6 presenting a couple of those concepts in a better way (per Jenny from the Singapore Math forums).  Can't recall which concepts overlap, and don't have the texts anymore to compare, unfortunately.  I do remember that after having finished Standards 6A-6B, level 7 still seemed like a step up, but the transition was seamless.  We didn't feel that time spent on level 6 was wasted.

We went through SM 6a and b (standards ed) fairly quickly and I felt it had good, important material that shouldn't be missed. Afterwards my daughter used Galore Park 2&3 and was well-prepared for Foerster Algebra. I'm sure other textbooks would have brought her to the same point, but I liked the format of SYRWL Maths - integrated arithmetic, geometry, algebra, data analysis, trigonometry etc... a not intimidating book, clear lessons, mastery oriented. We also did some Zaccarro and Keys to Algebra in there too.

My oldest did 6A and 6B. He was young so I wanted to give him the extra time to review. We also threw in more games and fun supplements that year. He then did AOPS PreAlgebra and loved it and is enjoying AOPS Algebra now. He's good at math but not a superstar. He probably could have gone straight from 5B to PreAlgebra but the review was good and I felt like it helped cement some of the concepts and skills.
