Online Highschool without a transcript

Ugh. My sister and BIL are dealing with a unique and stressful situation. Because of the current problem they need to put their 16-year-old in an online school as soon as possible. The tricky thing is that they don't have access to her previous transcripts.

So, is there an online high school that is easy to enroll in and doesn't require transcripts? Money is really tight, so cheap is good too. I figured if there is one someone here would know about it.

Thanks in advance!

If access to transcripts is difficult, I'll suggest going the route of legally and officially declaring that the family is starting homeschooling. The family just needs to fill out whatever paperwork is required by their state in order to start legally homeschooling.

Then the student will be eligible for online classes (rather than an online school), and dual enrollment (classes at the local community college that count for both high school and college credit). The parents would then make a transcript of the student's coursework, even if all of the coursework is done online.

Time4Learning would be one option. It is $30/month for high school. It covers core subjects for each grade of high school (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and then the electives of Health and Personal Finance. No Foreign Language, which is often a requirement for college admissions, so if the student hasn't done that yet and college is on the radar for this student's future, it would be good to earn at least 2 credits of the same foreign language in some way. I believe the coursework is self-grading, with a progress report for parents, to make it easy for parents to keep records and make a transcript.

Or, the family could line up a series of online courses from different providers to fulfill the student's requirements for high school graduation. Most of these would be graded by the instructor. These will vary in price.

Or, if Christian material is okay for this family, something like the computer CD programs from Switched-On Schoolhouse (or, the cheaper workbook versions of Life-Pacs) from Alpha-Omega might be an option. Or the CD-based programs called "PACEs" from ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) -- see scope and sequence here.

Another possibility might be a virtual charter through a local public school. There is a good chance that charter would be the ones to go to the student's previous school and request a transcript, so then the parents would not be in the position of having to provide a transcript from the past school, AND, the virtual charter would provide a transcript of whatever coursework the student did with them. Many virtual charters are run through public schools and so are often FREE or low cost, as they are public school done at home. So they also provide teaching and grading support. What state is the student in? That will help us direct you to virtual charters available to your niece.

However, at some point the family WILL need to get an official transcript from the school that she is exiting, esp. it at some point future to high school graduation she wants to apply for admission to a trade school, community college, or a college… So, that's something they may need to work on, once the immediate schooling situation gets settled. If some of the difficulty about getting the transcripts is due to court-ordered stuff, since this young lady is 16yo, that should help her be able to have legal access to her own records, and for HER to make the request for the past school to send an official transcript to the school of choice, if the family wants to do an online school such as American School of Correspondence (which does require a transcript from the previous school).

BEST of luck! Warmly, Lori D.
