JUMP ROPES! lol.

I'm sure this is nothing new to some of you, but jump ropes have revolutionized my homeschool so far this year! SWB has talked about having her kids run laps around the house during the school day, and I'm sure that works great, too! But for us, jump ropes are even more efficient because no one has to put shoes on, etc., so it's not very disruptive. I've hung the ropes on the wall right next to our school table, and the girls now jump for 5-10 minutes between subjects. (So we'll do math, jump rope, WWE, jump rope, etc.) The effect has been magical and the girls are focusing so well!

Note: It does help that our school room happens to be in the basement (we have a walk-out basement with stone floors). Might be harder if you do school on an upper floor of your house, but if you're on the main floor or basement, the jumping should work well.

Again, I'm sure most of you more experienced homeschool moms know this sort of thing already, but it's new to me and working wonders, so I thought I'd share. :-)

We have a swing set up in the hallway that divides the kicthen/school room from the living room. The kids are always swinging on it.

Before that the most popular thing was the chin-up ball in the hallway.

Before that, those balls you can sit on.

Before that it was the elliptical running machine pulled up to the table where you would expect a chair to be.

We have a Rody Max and a pogo ball DD uses to hop through the house after she wore out her hopper ball, plus space in the living room for her to tumble (and occasionally an old twin sized mattress as a crash pad). We also have a mini trampoline. On her most difficult days, I make her run to check the mail. It's between 1/3 and 1/2 of a mile, round trip.

We have an exercise ball that the kids sit (bounce) on at the table. I frequently have the boys running around the house or just doing jumping jacks in place.

My girls are more likely to need to go outside to take a walk (get some fresh air) to calm down than specifically for the exercise. Well, that or a nutritious snack. Eating ritght & getting proper sleep tends to cut down on the tears.

My older kids run a mile or s mile and a half before we start. Or they cut wood. For my 14 yo Ds in particular it makes a huge difference in attitude and focus.

Do you have all your kids do this?  My kids are great, fast runners but don't enjoy it at all.  I've been considering ways to get them out running more.  My dh and I run everyday and I'd love our whole family to do it.

We have a rebounder that only comes out after the winter holidays. Before that kids can go outside. But once it is January, it is waaaay cold and going outside feels like a job.  We always have one of those pull up bars that sit in a doorway, and foam rollers etc.

It helps that my boys are ballet dancers so their afternoons/evenings are very physical

I also have them do 'brain gym' activities between things...but I hadn't thought of a jump rope.  I might have to try that.
