Janie Grace
I did a double take today. I mean, I seriously thought the girl forgot to put on pants. I just CAN'T SEE IT as a dress!!! NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
I wore a similar dress with a wide belt back in 1980 or so. Some styles are not worth revisiting!

Butter
They look exactly like shirts. I used to wear something similar with leggings. I can't imagine wearing just that shirt/dress. How do you walk, move, sit, pick something up off the floor...?
itsheresomewhere
Neighbor girl had on a dress like that with black leggings and a shiny wide black belt. It looked cute on her.
marbel
Oh well it's Forever 21! Everything there is too short! My daughter and I were looking at those last night. They'd be cute if they were long enough to actually be a dress. Could look cute over skinny jeans or leggings.

Leggings and belt would make all the difference. I am talking about as is, the way the model is wearing it. That's how I saw it today (in the TJ Maxx parking lot) and did a triple take.
Jean in Newcastle
I'm old enough to remember mini shirt dresses from the sixties. So it depends on how old you want to go.
ErinE
Agree with leggings and a belt or even just a belt and booties. Otherwise, it looks exactly like a nightshirt.
Excelsior! Academy
Why on earth would anyone want to wear a dress with long sleeves and bare legs whilst barely covering their derriere?
Guest
I decided No More Plaid a number of years ago, as it usually ends up looking like a school uniform. THIS instance probably would not due to the length...but even so. Just Say No to Plaid. At least for dresses. Or nightshirts.
kiana
I actually think they're super cute, but of course I would never wear one anywhere professional. I'd totally wear it on a date to somewhere casual though. On the other hand, if I wore it around my mother, she'd say "where are your pants?" Mimm
With leggings, it would look cute. Alone, it looks like you just rolled out of bed and forgot your pants.
Joyofsixreboot
My 17 yo wears them with leggings and combat boots. A little to Courtney Love for me but no ALE.
MercyA
I agree; they look like night shirts. Wear the denim one, add some stirrup pants, a shiny faux-leather belt, lots of bangles, and big bangs, and you've got your volcanic 80's ensemble for Halloween. :coolgleamA:
kitten18
I'm old enough to remember mini shirt dresses from the sixties. So it depends on how old you want to go.My sister had a homecoming dress in 1973 that was much shorter than those dresses. I would like them better if the hem was straight all the way around. I think being cut up on the sides is what makes it look like they forgot their pants.

Seasider
I wore a similar dress with a wide belt back in 1980 or so. Some styles are not worth revisiting! I had some short getups but I guess I'm now a fuddy duddy and married to one. Neither of us would let our dds out of the house in the "dress" without some sort of leggings below. ktgrok
It's not just you. A girl wore one to my friend's son's baptism. I SWEAR it look like she just forgot pants. I cannot accept this as a trend. I just can't. And in church! :svengo: Edited to add: the one I saw was pinstriped, it seriously just looked like she wore a men's shirt, sleeves rolled to the elbows, no pants.

Carol in Cal.
I think they are cute. Having said that, although I did wear fairly short skirts in the 70's, when I had a dress like this I wore stirrup pants with it. And cute deep red eelskin pumps with spike heels. I was CUTE.
redsquirrel
A couple years ago there was an article about a similar trend on Jezebel. There was this super funny flowchart to help you determine if you were wearing a dress or forgot your pants. When I see someone wearing something like that I think of that flowchart, which ended with 'Honey, you are wearing a tunic. Go back inside and put on some pants." My mother gave me something and I keep looking at it and thinking "world's most formal nightgown or ugliest dress?" I could go either way, and I don't want to ask her. I have asked a few people and no one can decide. It is a mystery

As is, it looks like a nightshirt. Otherwise I think it's cute.

Guest
Not a fan. A lady wore one of these to a ball game I attended recently. Although she belted it, and it was a little longer than those in the picture, I still did not care for the look. The shirt tail hem just says, "pants go here."

Starr
This reminds me of long ago when wearing a slip for a skirt started to be a thing in The Village in NYC. Lady Florida.
It does look like a night shirt, but the length doesn't bother me. I came of age in the original mini skirt days (late 60s early 70s).

kewb
It looks like a nightshirt. With leggings,an oversize belt, gigantic blue hoop earrings, and some big hair I would be back in the 80's.
Katy
They should just start calling them plaid tunics and forget the whole dress thing.. A shirt dress isn't a shirt dress unless it's at least knee length and belted. Otherwise it's just an oversized shirt.

G5052
For some of us, the length would be an issue without a skirt or pants underneath. My sensible teen would comment that sitting down would be tricky indeed. She likes swingy, shorter skirts, but not that short.

Mergath
Lol... you guys must not remember being teenagers. That's what they're supposed to look like. In no small part because it drives us old people nuts, but probably also because it gives off that sexy (well, they think so anyway, lol) "I just rolled out of bed" vibe. And I'm sure it's comfy too, to wander around all day in what is essentially a short flannel nightgown. I totally would have worn that as a teen. :P

shawthorne44
The look says to me, "I had a one-night stand, and I decided to borrow one of the guy's shirts rather than wear my party dress." I think that is why the belt and the leggings make it OK. It puts it into the "I used my own closet to get dressed this morning" category.
Peaceful Isle
I would wear that!! .....over my jeans :) Totally looks like a shirt, and makes me uncomfortable looking at it. lol Like they forgot their pants. For goodness sake, put on leggings or something under them, I used to wear plaid shirts like that over my tees with my pegged stone washed jeans/ or stirrup pants, and metalic blue eye liner...
