Sarah0000
How big are the Unifix letter blocks? Do they stay together pretty well? How do they compare to Reading Rods? DS liked to make words as signs and captions for things he builds. Suggestions for a block letter set that could also be used for some basic spelling lessons and that he can move around easily once assembled (so not tiles or puzzle pieces)? I've seen the bigger size ABC blocks but they would take up a lot of space if we got enough for spelling lessons. I like that unifix are color coded as well. Shoes+Ships+SealingWax
Unifix letters appear to be the same size as standard Unifix - about 3/4" cubes. There's even a whole Unifix Phonics set, color-coded blue & red. That would probably include a higher proportion of vowels.
Sarah0000
Yeah, that's what I was looking at. They are so tiny though. I'm not sure they would work well if using alongside building blocks.

KarenNC
Have you considered using a sharpie to draw letters on legos/megablocks/duplos?
Chris in VA
When we do blocks in preschool, I include a clipboard and paper. The kids make signs by writing, then they take the sign off the clip board and attach it to a unit block that I've hot-glued a clothespin to. They stand up the block next to their creations. Maybe that could work for you.
Sarah0000
He wouldn't stop playing to write on paper. He may use Legos if I write letters on them, but then he'd have to attach them to a base since they don't snap together at the sides. Even a shorter word like library wouldn't fit on a single base. Lego should really make a spelling set.
Chris in VA
Hmm. ...Why do you think he would "stop playing" to write a sign with another method, If that is the case?.I would say it IS playing, to write a sign, if the sign is the child's idea. Maybe he'd think it was neat, to have his own clipboard or own sign making basket. YOu could add a camera for him to take pics of his creations. Sarah0000
Yes that would be playing. I meant I don't think he'd stop building long enough to want to write a sign. I could try though.
