MooCow
So we switched from 3 1/2 years of Surely to R&S this year. Grade 6, btw. It has been quite a painful transition . Both of us are frustrated, hate doing it, and for some odd reason it is confusing and he has managed to forget everything he learned in Shurely. I switched because there was no diagramming, just the sentence labeling and I wanted to take English (one of his subjects that comes naturally to him) to the next level. Any tips to help us make the transition easier would be appreciated! He is begging to go back to Shurely. I remember when we started Shurely it confused the diddly out of us, and I had to keep stopping, then restarting until we got how to do it. I'd like to continue with R&S, but honestly I'm about to chuck it. :( Ps we are at the end of our third week of school, and just finishing chapter 5. D'oh! I mean lesson 5 of chapter
Clear Creek
Chapter 5? or lesson 5? There are 59 lessons in the first five chapters, so that is a lot to cover in three weeks!! I had a bonus student (not my kid) that I taught R&S 6. He had had several years of Shurley English before I began teaching him, and he struggled mightily. I though he would have been more accurately placed in R&S 5, but it was not my choice where he was placed. If you are on lesson 5 and he is still struggling, I would highly recommend moving him down to R&S 5. R&S 6 assumes a lot of prior knowledge (in my experience) that is still explicitly taught in R&S 5.
SilverMoon
The first couple chapters do throw some review of the last book in there and seemed overwhelming. By the nouns chapter it backed up to the beginning and started moving forward from there. How are you doing the lessons? For a child who's struggling I'd be using that teaching session in the TM, including the oral quiz, and doing the Class Time exercises on a whiteboard with him. Then he ought to be able to do the written exercises on his own. Another idea is to do the odd problems of all the class and written one day, and the evens the next day, thus spreading a lesson across 2 days and giving it more time to soak in.
MooCow
That's pretty much what have what I've been doing, also adding in some easier grammar worksheets.
SilverMoon
If he's struggling that bad even though you're actively teaching lessons I'd strongly consider switching to the 5 book with mom-dependent teaching. Though I would keep plugging through chapter two to make sure it's not just the new curriculum learning curve getting to him. (That assumes you meant *lesson* five and not *chapter* five, since five chapters in a few weeks is breakneck speed.)
Reefgazer
Yes, this is my recommendation; pop back into R+S 5. Chapter 5? or lesson 5?
