Staceyshoe
I'm certain my youngest is a 2e kid. For the past couple of years, we've been working on the things he struggles with, and he's made some progress. But I have some real concerns, and I want to make sure I'm not missing a piece of the puzzle. We're starting to talk about getting an evaluation for him. I've talked with some professionals (pediatrician and public school speech therapist) about my concerns, and they have been very dismissive. Ds excels academically and compensates for his challenges amazingly well. I'm going to be calling a couple of specialists who were recommended to me. Right now I'm organizing my thoughts and coming up with my main questions/concerns to discuss with them. Any BTDT advice for me before we start this process? prairiewindmomma
I have 2 2(e) kids. There are a ton of posts on getting evals on the Learning Challenges board; many of us are dealing with kids with tremendous challenges as well as tremendous gifts.
OneStepAtATime
Agree, check on the LC board. Lots of 2e kids there.
Crimson Wife
Dr. Deirdre Lovecky no longer does neuropsych evals but when she called to tell me that, she recommended checking the list at the 2E Newsletter website: http://2edb.info/ Looking at that list, I have heard good reviews through the grapevine about the following: Dr. Amend, Drs. Eide (often their WL is closed but it's worth checking), Dr. Peters, Dr. Rimm, Dr. Ruf, Dr. Silverman, and Dr. Yermish Dr. Carolyn Light in San Diego and Dr. Melanie Crawford in Reno are other testers I've heard of as good for 2E evals.

Incredibly helpful! Thank you! Dr. Amend did a psycho-educational eval on my older son, and I have tremendous respect for his professional judgement. I had heard that only an audiologist can evaluate the kind of issues we're seeing in ds, but a local friend with a similar situation said that local audiologists weren't helpful and Dr. Amend was extremely helpful to her. I'll definitely be giving him a call! Thank you!
Crimson Wife
I was told by the audiologist who ran the first part of the CAPD eval on my oldest that teasing apart auditory processing problems from working memory problems from attention problems is very tricky. She wouldn't run the 2nd part until after DD1 had gotten a full neuropsych eval to rule out ADHD and WM deficit. Long story short, we've been in triage mode and have had to put getting DD1 a NP eval on the shelf.
Staceyshoe
I'm definitely gaining a new respect for how difficult "twice exceptional" issues are, and we are just getting started. I've rarely felt so bewildered as a parent!

I've rarely felt so bewildered as a parent! I agree. I found the book The Mislabeled Child helpful to begin to sort out some of the different issues that look so similar. Edited for clarity.

We are still teasing apart whether it's really ADD inattentive, working memory, or auditory processing issues.
