stephanier.1765
As a parent, I would be nervous about these changes especially since they seem to pigeon hole the lesser academic children. However as an educator, I'm excited to see how it works and to see the results. Finland schools scrap subjects
regentrude
Sounds like unit studies. I don't see what the problem is.
SKL
Sounds to me like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. At least it won't be my kids who are the guinea pigs this time ....
Jean in Newcastle
I think it will be interesting to see how it works. Finnish schools are one of the best so they really are a good laboratory for this sort of thing. Many countries have tracking esp. in high school. I wonder if they've tracked students in their traditional model and are just adapting it to the new topical approach?
briansmama
Seems like a great way to tap into students' interests for deeper learning, especially if teachers are able to choose topics of study most likely to engage their students, and since Finnish teachers are so highly regarded and enjoy autonomy over their classes, I bet they are. I know I prefer to study topics of interest rather than individual subjects. I would love to hear details on how Finnish teachers are implementing topic study. So far I've only been able to glean very general examples and I'm curious to learn more!
Audrey
Sounds like unit studies. I don't see what the problem is. I was thinking that -- and of the similarities to block studies à la Waldorf.
