Anyone make their own lotions/moisturizers?

Making lotion is pretty easy and cheap after the initial investment.

Supplies needed are things such as an accurate scale and a stick blender.

If you want to go completely preservative free then making balms are the better choice, they do not contain water. Lotion contains mostly water and will require preservatives unless you are willing to keep it in the fridge and make small batches.

It also doesn't have the "dangerous chemicals" issues that soap does.

I've tried several I found online, but haven't liked any of them better than plain coconut oil or cocoa butter.

I ordered shea butter in bulk and discovered I don't particularly like it at all (Or any of the recipes with it as an ingredient).  It manages to be greasy and drying simultaneously.

Next time I try one I'll try 50% aloe vera gel and 50% coconut oil, whipped together.  I've heard that one is good.

I make our lotion and sunscreen. I vary the recipes, but use wellnessmama dot com as a general recipe for each.

I am not certain those SPF numbers on that website are correct.

I don't know where that person is getting those SPF numbers but those numbers seem incredibly high on some of them. I would be interested in looking at research on it but I would be dubious about trusting simple carrot seed oil for protection.

I started out using this whipped body butter recipe as it is written, then started experimenting with other oils and scents (essential oils).

But in the end, I only make this now for gifts.  I love avocado oil in the winter for body.  I use it for face only before bed.  coconut oil during the day.  Summertime, I use coconut oil only.

Now that's so interesting because shea butter is about the only thing that works for my dry lips and hands in the winter. I love it. I've never felt CO really moisturizes. I really like the effect and weight of jojoba oil also.

Everyone's skin must react differently.

Not lotion, but body butter for winter.

I use cocoa butter, coconut oil, almond or avocado oil, EOs for fragrance. I just google recipes and mix and match, depending on which ingredients I have + my mood of the day.

For my face, I just use straight jojoba oil or coconut oil, so no mixing necessary. Quite often I'll just use straight coconut oil for my whole body, too. It's quick and easy.
