You know, saying "ignore this thread" to this group is like saying "don't push the big red button!"

Homeschoolers.     They always think the rules don't apply to them.

Coming out of my long time lurking because I couldn't ignore this thread..  :leaving:

Ugh. All the books I keep looking up are sooo sad. Abused children, orphan children, neglected children.... one-parent families due to death or abandonment seems to be pretty regular, too. Seems like the eras in and of themselves are sad enough. Were two-parent, loving homes really THAT rare?

I don't believe they were rare.  I just think people thought they weren't interesting enough to write about.

I think it's kind of like all of the Disney princesses having tragic backstories...

We had dinner at my parents. I brought dessert. Lemon meringue pie. Made with free range eggs and organic lemons. I figured I could have sold that pie for $50. It was really tasty, too. I give all the credit to Betty (Crocker).

So, I am reading this book (Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson) about a gal who is a nanny to two children who spontaneously combust when they get stressed. It was on several “Best of 2019” lists, which was the category I was looking to fill  for my reading challenge. It really isn’t that great a book. It’s written like the author is trying to “push the envelope” just to get attention. I hate that. I will finish it because I am already half way through and it’s a pretty easy read and I’m trying to beat my 2018 Reading Challenge number, but.... that’s all.

Morning! I didn't realize until yesterday that this will be Memorial weekend. How did I miss that? I look at the wall calendar at least 3 times a day and it's clearly there.

Me too.  I've been thinking it's a month or so away.  I realize that makes no sense....

Morning.  It's Friday!   I am sooo tired.  Serious insomnia last night and I'm not sure why.  I felt itchy and twitchy.  Maybe from all the pollen out there.  But I did take a shower before bed which usually solves that.   Stayed up late (not unusual these days), went to bed around 1am.  Lied there until about 3am.  Got up again.  Sat up until 4:30am.  Tried again.  Sort of slept until 8am.   It's going to be a really long day.

Good morning!

It's 34* at the Grand Canyon and we should be breaking camp and heading for Route 66.  I made my kids learn "Take It Easy" by the Eagles for today when we would stand on the corner in Winslow, Arizona.  😄  Nevertheless I woke up with the birds and then went back to sleep.

We have a bit more cleaning up and organization to do.  Otherwise nothing.

Coffee!

Day!!

School and work.

I’m feeling a bit blue and out of sorts. This is the first year in five years we haven’t gone to Memorial Day Family Camp.😢 We have been studying Memorial Day, though. Beautiful Feet came out with a Memorial Day pack and we’ve been going through that. Not all the books have arrived yet (they were sold out of the pack, but I downloaded the study guide and bought the books separately.  They are all picture books,  but they are really well chosen.

I have waddled, bounced, shimmied, and gyrated and Baby is still not impressed. Maybe I should try holding still until she gets bored and comes out to see where the party went!  🤪

Guess what guess what?

I have done the following today with little to no coughing:

  • Unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher.
  • Cleaned the sink.
  • Brought laundry down and started it and then brought the hamper back upstairs.
  • Read a chapter of a book aloud.
  • Moved the laundry from the washer to the dryer.

I'm getting better! 🎉

Teen boy refuses to do the day’s math lesson.  Teen boy’s attitude after being told he must do the math results in loss of computer privileges for a week.  Teen boy escalates, resulting in a month of no computer.  Teen boy comes in the room a minute later and says he will do his math in return for reinstatement if computer privileges.  Teen boy is informed that this will not be happening and that his proposed resolution is exactly what the situation would have been if he had just done the math in the first place.  Teen boy capitulates and does the math.  It takes less than half an hour. Lesson learned?

Stay tuned upcoming segments of These Days of Our Quarantined Lives!

Not meeting with dd to work out today.   She asked to skip because she has a bad headache.  It's just as well since lack of sleep, plus my one shin is hurting, plus dh is home (Yippee!!!! on that last part).   Now I just have to do well with controlling what I eat just sitting at home doing much of nothing.   I'm tracking using WW points (although I didn't join, I have the old books and figured out how to calculate new points) and have been doing well for the two days I've been tracking.

I have a lot more laundry to take care of.  Particularly sleeping bags - easy but bulky and time consuming.  Otherwise I think I'll deal with the snack box and beverage box and then pillows.

Dd13 and I watched Kon-Tiki - the true story of a Norwegian explorer who was certain that the polynesians had come from South America and sailed from Peru across the Pacific on a raft to prove it. It's available on Netflix now.  I went to the Kon-Tiki museum in Oslo just after the film came out.

How did you do this? ASD Boy has TWO curves in his spine! One between his shoulder blades and one lower down.

I've been giving him supplements--calcium, vitamins D as K, and 5HTP.

This based on the theory that the scoliosis was due to poor bone formation during a period of rapid growth so I ought to support healthy bone formation. Calcium of course is critical for that, and vitamins D and K assist. 5HTP is a precursor to serotonin, which it turns out is also critical in bone formation. I know from 23andMe that ds has double copies of a version of the TPH2 gene that doesn't work very well--TPH2 codes for a protein that helps convert tryptophan to 5HTP, which then gets converted to serotonin and later to melotonin. If he can't produce 5HTP he can't produce serotonin either, so supplementing the 5HTP seemed like a good idea; I strongly suspect that this disruption contributes to many of the challenges this kid faces--serotonin plays a role in so many things from anxiety to tic disorders to hearing acuity. I didn't know it was involved in bone formation until I started researching the scoliosis.

I also encouraged him to use inversion to allow his spine to stretch out.

I don't actually know of course if any of this made a difference or if the scoliosis would have improved in its own but it may be helping so I'm going to continue.

Good Morning!

Happy Saturday!

Really.bad.headache.  It was really bad when I went to bed at midnightish, but miraculously I was able to sleep until 5.  I've been up since then, trying to fight this thing off.  I think it's going to be a long day.

Good morning!

I need to put away laundry today, and maybe re-organize camping gear.  I might put all the car-camping gear in bins in the garage and just keep the backpacking stuff in the house. There are more sleeping bags to be laundered.

Nothing else really planned for the day.

Coffee!

Saturday!!!

Our pleasant weather is over. We’re supposed to be heating up to 104 degrees this week.😩😩☀️☀️☀️☀️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Nothing planned for the weekend. Likely just housework and yardwork. I’ve got a couple books I’m looking forward to diving into.

I love irises. We had a bunch at our old house. They would make such big, beautiful bouquets. We didn’t take any when we moved, but I did get some from my mom at Easter. I am managing to keep them alive.

Headache is still hanging around, but is under control for the moment.

While I second slept, we had several visitors (all outside, at least most with social distancing):

a sweet lady from church who dropped off a graduation gift for dd17

one of dh's coworkers came to drop something off

then he came again when he realized that he had forgotten something

and a black snake decided to hang out on our front porch for a while.

I spent $100 at Christian Book. I spent $30 at CLE. Now I'm spending $60 at Amazon. You'd think Matt was working.

I'm being lazy.  It's gloomy and raining and even though I slept okay last night, I'm still tired.

I've been weighing every day to keep a rolling 7 day average of gains/losses.  I've always thought weighing first thing in the morning would give the lowest weight.   So I weigh after my initial bathroom trip.   But the past few days I've also weighed after eating breakfast.  And I've weighed less after breakfast.  I don't understand how that could be.  It's more than a few ounces - over a pound difference.
