I forgot (I think?) to mention that yesterday was week 9 of my steps.  I'd say I'm catching up with Jean but that's not how math works except that I learned math in California Public Schools so that's kind of how math works, so I'm catching up with Jean!

Dodododo. Dodododo.

It works if you're taking more steps per day.  Which you should.

I think my son is developing an allergy to...

water 😞

Did you just move? I felt the same way about DD after one of our moves. I think the water was harder there and it exacerbated her eczema. Can you get a water softener?

Baby has relapsed. He's really not that bad but I was hoping it was over. And the first case of the strange polio like virus hitting little kids has hit our state in our town! I am telling myself that I am not going to be a hypochondriac, but he may never leave the house this winter.

If I didn’t want to talk about it I wouldn’t have posted!  But now he wants me to read to him.

  • He's allergic to a mineral in the water
  • It's too hard
  • The water is exacerbating another allergy
  • The hot water heater needs to be cleaned out (my childhood rash)

Pools are filled with chlorine and are very bad for you. A human being should not be swimming in a pool. I am in no way suggesting that he stop swimming but I don't think that a reaction to the pool is all that significant or shocking. I feel like the issue is probably in the house and his skin is irritated so putting him in a giant pool of irritant is going to have a negative effect. I have extremely sensitive skin and a lot of allergies so I have a lot of opinions and experience on the matter.

I have no idea about the water here.  But it’s not sudden.  And his eczema all disappeared after we narrowed down his food allergies.  We started noticing spots after showers about 6 months ago, maybe?  They just seem to be getting incrementally worse, seemingly unrelated to moving, but who knows.

What kind of symptoms?  Hopefully not anaphylaxis...

It's an allergy booyah.  😞

No, like red blotches, some with raised bumps, and irritability.  Sometimes he asks for Benadryl, like tonight, and it all the disappears within 20 minutes and he’s happy again.  Nights where he doesn’t take Benadryl, the rash persists for hours after his shower.

No, I mentioned the pool because I was talking about water temp.  I didn’t think it was a factor.

Does he drink a lot of water? If he does then his mouth should be very irritated if it's a true water allergy.

I said developing...possibly.

He does drink a lot of water.  Bottled.  But it just seems to be irritating his skin at this point.

Could be something in the water, I guess.  But he’s allergic to grass.  So why not water, too?  Lol

2 of mine had this happen to them in early puberty. It was a house we had lived in for more than 4 yrs. It cleared up when we went to visit family in Idaho then came back when we got home.

Son 2 now has to use Nutragena soap and shampoo or he gets HIVES all over his body and scalp. He still has a bumpy rash on his face that doesn't go away. He keeps insisting it is NOT related to eating dairy and wheat. Riiight!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this.

Omg if he’s allergic to wheat or dairy on top of everything else I will seriously break down.  ‘Cause DS has a bumpy rash on his upper arms that won’t go away.

I’m sticking with teen boy not washing well.  Because denial.

I took dd10 to the eye doctor this morning.  She needs bifocals.  Sigh.

Dd8 just "outgrew" her bifocals a few months ago.  Now dd10 needs them.  I hope they help her.

Her distance vision is getting better.  I think with correction her distance vision will now be 20/35.

Uncorrected, dd10's vision is 20/400.  She can read the E.

Ds has similar vision to dd10. We have talked about lasik at some point in the future.

My IRL BFF is allergic to chloramine, the bleach like cousin chemical they use to sterilize drinking water.

She got a whole house filter put on her house and she is fine now. It just complicates life when she has to travel.

Good to know.  I’ll keep that in mind.

remind me to find DS an allergist down here...

My body did not like TX tap water, fwiw.

The total dissolved solids in our water in TX were over 400. Here, I average in the 40s when I test it. Our RO unit leaves us with a TDS reading of 2.

You test it yourself or have someone test it?  I’ve never tested my water.  Anywhere.

I bought a TDS meter off of amazon. High TDS counts in your water can put additional stress on your kidneys.

ETA: they carry kits for the other stuff (bacteria, ph, etc) in a variety of places—our hardware store had them.

The sewer regularly contaminated our municipal water supply in TX. The flash floods (it can rain 5” in an hour) overwhelm the sewers and when they overflow, they dump a ton of disinfectant in the water. Add to that that parts of the city has really old pipes....I just don’t trust anyone with accurately reporting water quality. We had some scary yellow water a few times combined with smelly water and I can’t drink TX water unless it has been through a carbon filter. It has a unique taste due to the mineral content. (I have the same problem with Orlando, FL water.)

Anyway, long story, but I wanted to test my water and then I wanted to confirm that my filtering system was set up properly.

Hi. Four hours to find out what I already knew- I have kidney stones. Saw a nurse practitioner- she was young. I had to explain some basic things to her. I also had to explain to her why I could not do the pain control things that she wanted me to do since they were contraindicated. She had ny chart right there explaining why-  which is why I normally only see specialists who understand complicated patients. But she checked for infection and I had that ruled out which is what I really needed.

Now I am on the cusp of getting really really sick. My body has been really stressed by the kidney stone pain and lack of sleep and I can feel my immune system giving up which is not good. So Slache can walk a lot tonight and catch up to me because my exercise goals are on “pause”.

Good morning!

Dd15 is no longer with us.  🎈Happy Birthday, Dd16! 🎈

Ikslo, my 20yo went through various phases of allergy reactions/eczema and there was one phase where water temperature (cold) would cause an itchy rash.  It stopped after a few months.  I wonder if ds's system is just trying to get used to a different kind of water used by your city?  Saltier water, maybe?

Regular day of lessons, kids' orchestra dress rehearsal tonight.  Ds14 and I still need haircuts.

Coffee!

Being allergic to grass is not so uncommon. I have one who is, too. He used to break out in eczema but now just gets runny nose, drippy eyes, sneezing, etc.. I think I preferred the eczema.

I would definitely prefer a runny nose over DDs eczema! Routinely we're like- DD, did you sit on something gunky? Oh wait, that's your oozing skin staining your pants leg. 🤢

Ikslo, she just had patch testing to test for chemical sensitivities and came back positive for a bunch of them. You may want to ask about that for DS because I bet it's a chemical in the water or maybe some sort of product he uses after he gets out. They don't call it an allergy but we have to cut out all fragrances, some other stuff I can't pronounce with complicated names, tee tree oil, and elastics. Try finding underwear for girls without elastic!

Now that we've moved from our last house with the bad water, DD rarely gets a rash around her mouth. I'm sure it was something in the water there. It could be a chemical in the water, the fabric of the towels, the detergent, the soap...who knows. DD's friend can't swim in treated water because she breaks out from the chemicals- saltwater, saline, or bromine....it doesn't matter.

Good morning.

Happy nirthday, Susan's DD!

Jean, I am glad it wasn't a bladder infection, but I'm sorry you are feeling so bad. I hope you get to rest today.

Krissi, I'm up for my trim and coloring tomorrow. It's a good thing. My possum is showing.

Guys, I may well have a really hard decision to make later this week. On top of that, I'm working out of town, and my elder cat is doing better today, but I'm really feeling the sense that she may not be with us much longer. It's going to be a very rough month, albeit an exciting one and a real change in my life and my work. I would appreciate some prayers for sure.

Ignoring the allergy by just treating with antihistamines isn't a great long-term solution, but you might look at giving the kid daily antihistamines like zyrtec or allegra just to tamp down his overall histamine load for a bit while you work on getting him in to an allergist.  Benadryl makes me feel like butt.  I had to have some with my food reaction Saturday (did I mention that hear? Yup, I poisoned myself on flavored popcorn.) and my brain still hasn't fully cleared up from either the reaction or the Benadryl.
