Susan in TN
I took a pre-lunch walk around the park with a couple of the girls. I have had this low-level feeling of anxiety since yesterday and I think the walk helped a bit. I suspect my hormones have begun their long journey through chaos and this is one result. 5

Jean in Newcastle
A lady asked for help with homeschooling on Nextdoor (community website). All these people from public online schools and public school home based programs are responding. That is not homeschooling! (I realize that they are done at home and have nothing against that but this lady wants actual help on how to homeschool and this ain't it.)

I have pointed out the legal difference while acknowledging that there is some overlap in day to day experience. (Though the buck stops with the school district and not you so that is a huge difference that I don't think that people even think about.) I am speaking up because one of our councilwomen gave me grief and a lot of misinformation a number of years ago about how I had to "homeschool" under the umbrella of the public school and I do not want this misinformation to proliferate. I am meeting with the woman who is interested in actually homeschooling tomorrow at Starbucks.

This is not a conversation I have had and I don't understand why it would be offencive. I would just say that we use our own curriculum instead of what the state uses. Isn't that really the difference?

I would just say that we use our own curriculum instead of what the state uses. Isn't that really the difference? The problem is that these people believe that they are homeschooling. They tell people around them that they are homeschooling. They fill out surveys saying that they are homeschooling (thus seriously putting in doubt homeschooling stats). Then someone like me comes along and points out that they aren’t legally homeschoolers. I realize that they are schooling at home. I realize that it is working for them. I have zero problem with that. But when people then start to think that homeschoolers have to have books and curriculum that is assigned and overseen by the local school district, and that that is what homeschooling is, we have a problem. 4

Critterfixer
In other news, I attempted to recycle today. However, the kind fair ladies did not look favorably on my enterprise and did not let me take all the eggs that the fair chickens laid. I wanted to take them to make paint with. Their regs say they can't send them home with anyone who might eat them. I said I wouldn't eat them, but acknowledged that they had to obey their rules, and we parted amicably. Only I really wanted those fresh eggs for my paint project. My girls are molting at the moment and not laying. Other than that, it's been a quiet sort of day. Critterfixer
My art teacher showed me how to take that little project for Giotto and make something absolutely fantastic out of egg yolk, vinegar, water and tube watercolors. It's rocking my world right now. You use it over finished watercolors mostly, and in small places, but a dab of the stuff can make the eyes in a portrait shine. It's fantastic.
