Space station
If I were to do these units with my dd11 next year, what order would you suggest? Does it matter? Here is what I am thinking: Botany in 8 Lessons (over the summer - the 3 months of the year things grow here!) Cells Carbon Chemistry (Genetics using another resource - suggestions welcome!) (Evolution using another resource - maybe the new Bill Nye book?) (Anatomy & she wants to do dissections - resources TBD) Brain I am looking to create a fun biology class for her. Thanks! MamaChicken
Have you done elements already? I would do that before carbon chemistry. It's a lot of fun!
....
Yes, I think The Elements should probably come before Carbon Chemistry (IMO) - unless you guys have already done some chem stuff.
Chrysalis Academy
There are a ton of cool, free resources for teaching evolution and genetics at HHMI's Biointeractive website, you should definitely check them out - I have a whole stack, and we used some this year in 7th and will use more in 8th. They are mostly high school level but there are some that work for sciency middle schoolers. http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive There is also this amazing website with free lessons and labs on genetics, as well as lots of other biology topics http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/sci_edu/waldron/

Yes, we have already done Elements, which is part of why I want to use several of her units next year.

Space station
Have you done elements already? I would do that before carbon chemistry. It's a lot of fun! Yes, we did Elements last summer, and I know that Carbon Chemistry follows it. But what about the Botany, Cells, and Brain books? Anybody have a suggestion for the order of these, or doesn't it matter at all?
Nicholas_mom
Botany is great for summer/spring & Fall time of the year. It doesn't have to come in any particular order. We are doing the Brain now. We haven't done cells, yet. I would imagine it depends on how you want to do it. You can do first small to large such as start at cells, brain and then go human anatomy (big picture). Or go the other way Human Anatomy (big picture) then brain and then still smaller the cells. My ds is interested in the brain. So, I am starting with the brain and then going from there to nervouse system, circulatory system, etc. because everything starts at the brain and goes thru the body. No explicit advice but some random thoughts for you to think about. Have fun!
