Done. :)  I think I'm cross-eyed from staring at the computer for so long and, as before, I'm sure I've missed many curricula, books, and resources.  Also as before, please feel free to add to the thread and also to correct any of the information I post.  I'll be taking up the first 7 posts with the different categories of physics.

Happy reading! :)

Level: Honors Physics

Class: Yes. Wilson Hill

Teacher Resources: Yes, on CD and a separate solutions manual (answers to math questions are in text). There are additional resources available at the Novare Yahoo Group site. This includes model answers for non-mathematical questions for some of the texts that are linked from a post there.

Lesson Plans: Yes, on the Teacher Resource CD

Secular/Christian: See Publisher note. Teaches mainstream science, but discusses "wonder" (Centripetal) and God (Novare).

Program includes labs: Yes. Student information is in back of text, instructor material available separately.

Lab kit available: No

Background needed: Strong Algebra 1 program (like Dolciani or Forester) AND a Physical Science course.

Comments: I feel that this book is a "step" in the publishers advanced sequence.

It assumes student has had a strong intro to physics through a math-strong Physical Science course (like theirs or Derek Owens) and is solid on Algebra 1. For example, momentum doesn't seem to be covered, it is assumed student knows this from physical science. The author is a fan of the Forester series and just looking ASPC over, I can see the connection. The last five chapters are chemistry. More about the "physics-first" sequence here: https://www.novaresc...-math-sequence/

Physics Subject Test AKA SAT II in Physics

The Physics Subject Test assesses your understanding of concepts from one year of introductory physics on the college-preparatory level, as well as reasoning and problem-solving skills derived from lab experience. If youĂ¢â‚¬â„¢re thinking about pursuing a math- or science-based program of study (such as science, technology, engineering, or math), taking the Physics Subject Test is a great way to demonstrate your interests on your college application.

The Physics Subject Test is 60 minutes long and asks 75 multiple-choice questions. Every question has five answer choices. There are some independent questions, while others are grouped and ask about the same graph or picture. Perhaps surprisingly, you can't use a calculator on the Physics Subject Test. Calculus is not required.

I know that sometimes these courses are considered to be high school level (and some are labeled as such) but without a math component, I don't think they can be honestly called "high school physics". If a math component is added in from elsewhere, that could bump them up to high school level.

To add:

Time4Learning Physics (not sure where it fits)

Also regarding Phil4 Physics, they use the on-line version of College Physics.  Trigonometry is needed.  The course says you can take Algebra 2 concurrently, but we have not found that to be true.

Thank you.  This has been very helpful.

I am a little confused now between physics and AP physics. I know I was looking at an AP physics course that required regular/honors physics as a pre-requisite, but I don't know where I was looking now.  Other AP Physics courses seem to expect it to be the first physics course.  What would you do with an 11th grader who planned to major in physics?  regular physics 11th, and AP Physics 12th?  or would that be mostly the same content?  or AP Physics 11th?  and then what in 12th?

There are two different levels of AP Physics.

AP Physics 1 and 2 are algebra based. A student intending to major in physics would not receive college credit for this that counts towards his major since he will be required to take calculus based physics.

AP Physics C is calculus based. It can give a physics major college credit, except at schools that do not accept any outside credit and use AP solely for placement purposes.

It is perfectly fine to take algebra based AP physics as a first physics course, with no prior physics. It is, in fact, possible to take calc based physics as first physics course as well, but I would recommend this only for very strong students; I consider an algebra based course a good introduction and useful preparation.

What to do with your student will depend largely on his math preparation. If he did not take calculus yet, a rigorous calc based physics course would not work as first physics, unless the course is designed specifically to teach calc concurrently.

Can someone help me figure out if this course exists?

On Level (as opposed to honors)

Requires Algebra 1, and uses Algebra 1, but does not require Algebra 2

Asynchronous

Online

Regionally accredited

Ideally Secular

High Quality

I'm looking at the Derek Owens course, which seems to have everything on my list besides accreditation.   We may do that, but since DS hopes to transition to PS, I'd love accreditation too.

Connie, you are amazing! :001_wub: I have made some changes to Derek's course below in bold blue, based on our experience. Hope it's okay to suggest these changes!

Regular Algebra-based Physics Courses

Name: Derek Owens Physics

Publisher: Derek Owens

Where to buy: http://www.derekowens.com/course_info_physics.php

Level: Reg Physics or Honors Physics depending on whether the student completes the extra problems and the challenge problems on tests and homework sheets

Type: Online (video lectures and workbook), scan and send completed work to Derek for grading. He maintains an online gradebook for each student.

Additional Materials: Physics by Douglas Giancoli, 5th edition, published by Prentice Hall can be used as an additional reference source

Teacher Resources: N/A

Lesson Plans: N/A Syllabus with weekly schedule is available here

Secular/Christian: Secular with some slightly religious discussion in chapters 9 and 10 (but easy to leave this aside if learner wants to)

Program includes labs: Yes (about 9-10 labs in total, not every chapter requires a lab)

Lab kit available: Not for all labs. Some harder to find materials for specific labs may be purchased ($34 with shipping) or borrowed ($6 for shipping) from Derek.

Math background needed: Algebra 1

I'm not able to help with the accreditation but if validation with a SAT subject test is an option, email Derek and he will send you a list of content that his course does and does not cover for the SAT subject test. You will need to prep for those areas separately (but there isn't a lot that he doesn't cover).

Unfortunately, our district is ridiculously picky.  I like everything else that I see about this course, and since I'm planning it as an elective (they require 4 sciences, this would be his third plus one more senior year) I might just go with it anyway.

My son is a reasonably strong student, and he'll be taking pre-calc next year as a junior. We are looking for a two-year progression in physics for 11th and 12th grade. Any suggestions? He has taken Derek Owens before, for Algeba 1 and geometry, and he did well with both. If he took Derek Owens' Honors Physics next year, can anyone suggest an follow up class (perhaps AP) for his senior year? Something he can take concurrently with Calculus? Thanks!

One option might be to DE (this was our choice for lab experience). Our local community college's calculus-based mechanics and wave motion sections mostly use the Giancoli Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics textbook. ETA: our CC has calculus 1 (first semester calc) as a prerequisite and calculus 2 (second semester calc) as a co-requisite.

I think I've made all the additions and corrections that have been suggested so far. :)

Thank you so much. I am so, so sorry to be nitpicky...there's a mention of Derek's course in post #4 too (the very first one). At your convenience, of course, Connie. Just thought I should mention it. Thank you again (please imagine a bouquet of roses smiley here!).

No need to apologize, quark! :)  I'm firmly in the camp of "If I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right." :D  I've fixed the second Derek Owen's mention.

Hope this thread helps a few people.  Full disclosure - I'm planning physics for my dd for next year so the timing of me finally getting this thread finished was somewhat motivated by self-interest.  :leaving:

Couple corrections to the AP section:  You write "NOTE: You CANNOT label your student's chemistry course as Ă¢â‚¬Å“AP PhysicsĂ¢â‚¬...

I think you meant physics course  :-)

Also, for "ACCREDITED", did you mean "accredited" or I think you might mean "college board approved syllabus."?

Oops. :D  I did mean physics.  I was doing quite a bit of cutting and pasting to save myself some typing time.  I'll fix that. :)

Yes - that's what I meant by "accredited".  I noticed that one of the sites used that term to describe the AP course it offered so I thought that was the correct term.  I can change it to "College Board-approved syllabus" if that would be better, though.

IMHO, college board approved syllabus is clearer. Accredited can mean many things Such as NCAA approved so their DC can play sports in college, accreditation agency approved so credits transfer to another school if needed, etc.

  • 3 weeks later...

I haven't spent much time on the forum recently, so didn't see this thread until now.

My dd14 is taking the Clover Creek Physics class with Jetta this year and we are extremely pleased with it. The class is very well organised and expectations are clearly stated. They move along at a good clip and dd has to put the work in to do well. There is a lot of support available from Jetta, the teacher, and a very telling thing for me was when dd said that she really likes the fact that she can ask a question and doesn't feel stupid for doing so. Jetta is an excellent teacher. Her explanations in the morning messages she writes each day, and in the weekly live classes are very good. My dd wasn't really enthusiastic about physics before taking this class but she is really enjoying it and learning a huge amount. I am enjoying seeing her apply what she's learning to other things too, like robotics. I've even been subjected to a lecture from her on the physics of ballet lol!

I can answer other questions about the class if anyone has them.

Remind me how we get threads pinned?

By asking how to get a thread pinned, apparently. :)

Thanks, SWB, for pinning the science curriculum threads.  I hope that they can help people to more easily find what they are looking for and help to drive some traffic to the forum and to the Academy. :)

Math background needed: Algebra 1

DD#1 is almost done with this course & I realized today, as she was working an honors refraction problem that she was leaning heavily on her knowledge from this year's geometry course when solving it. While she's used trig, she hasn't really done anything else that her Algebra 1 background didn't cover. DH confirmed that DO expects the kids to know some geometry (or at least the idea of geometric proofs) when they get to this chapter (11 of 13?). So, taking it concurrently with Geometry at the very least might be a really good recommendation to add. I'm not sure she would have been able to solve this particular problem without the geometry she learned this year.

(Oh, and I forgot about the religious-y content in Chapter 10 until she was already past it. It is so out of place & not necessary. Blerg.)
