There are two different levels of AP Physics.

AP Physics 1 and 2 are algebra based. A student intending to major in physics would not receive college credit for this that counts towards his major since he will be required to take calculus based physics.

AP Physics C is calculus based. It can give a physics major college credit, except at schools that do not accept any outside credit and use AP solely for placement purposes.

 

It is perfectly fine to take algebra based AP physics as a first physics course, with no prior physics. It is, in fact, possible to take calc based physics as first physics course as well, but I would recommend this only for very strong students; I consider an algebra based course a good introduction and useful preparation.

 

What to do with your student will depend largely on his math preparation. If he did not take calculus yet, a rigorous calc based physics course would not work as first physics, unless the course is designed specifically to teach calc concurrently.

I'm not able to help with the accreditation but if validation with a SAT subject test is an option, email Derek and he will send you a list of content that his course does and does not cover for the SAT subject test. One option might be to DE (this was our choice for lab experience). Our local community college's calculus-based mechanics and wave motion sections mostly use the Giancoli Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics textbook. ETA: our CC has calculus 1 (first semester calc) as a prerequisite and calculus 2 (second semester calc) as a co-requisite.

IMHO, college board approved syllabus is clearer. Accredited can mean many things Such as NCAA approved so their DC can play sports in college, accreditation agency approved so credits transfer to another school if needed, etc.

I haven't spent much time on the forum recently, so didn't see this thread until now.

 

My dd14 is taking the Clover Creek Physics class with Jetta this year and we are extremely pleased with it. The class is very well organised and expectations are clearly stated. They move along at a good clip and dd has to put the work in to do well. There is a lot of support available from Jetta, the teacher, and a very telling thing for me was when dd said that she really likes the fact that she can ask a question and doesn't feel stupid for doing so. Jetta is an excellent teacher. Her explanations in the morning messages she writes each day, and in the weekly live classes are very good. My dd wasn't really enthusiastic about physics before taking this class but she is really enjoying it and learning a huge amount. I am enjoying seeing her apply what she's learning to other things too, like robotics. I've even been subjected to a lecture from her on the physics of ballet lol!

 

I can answer other questions about the class if anyone has them.

DD#1 is almost done with this course & I realized today, as she was working an honors refraction problem that she was leaning heavily on her knowledge from this year's geometry course when solving it. While she's used trig, she hasn't really done anything else that her Algebra 1 background didn't cover. DH confirmed that DO expects the kids to know some geometry (or at least the idea of geometric proofs) when they get to this chapter (11 of 13?). So, taking it concurrently with Geometry at the very least might be a really good recommendation to add. I'm not sure she would have been able to solve this particular problem without the geometry she learned this year.

 

(Oh, and I forgot about the religious-y content in Chapter 10 until she was already past it. It is so out of place & not necessary. Blerg.)
