LAmom
Anyone go from Math Mammoth 6 to Saxon? If so, where did you start? 8/7 or higher? Thanks! If you are on here and went to something else besides Saxon, feel free to share!

The correct answer is always to do Saxon's placement test. :-)
kiwik
You could try MM7.
Gil
If I were making the switch, I'd do the placement test. Saxon and Math Mammoth have almost opposing teaching philosophies--MM teaches one concept incrementally at a time and you do a lot of problems on that one concept, step by step, building up understanding and fluency for a good while, then you move on. Saxon is incremental and touches on many, many, many concepts at once. If you are working on K, they introduce the concept of K and you take one or two small steps, you review, introduce another small step, and review, another small step, and review. Definitely take the placement tests.
kiana
I would absolutely do the placement test if you really wanted to do Saxon, but unless MM has stopped working I would be more inclined to finish the scope and sequence by doing MM7, after which the student should be ready for algebra. LAmom
Okay- will definitely do the tests. I'm hesitant to do MM7 because I'm thinking dd needs a change and more review. It looks like 8/7 would give her enough review plus more pre-algebra before starting algebra 1. I am hoping to transition to saxon for highschool so thought is to start in 7th grade after her foundation from MM.
TheApprentice
Just for reference, my ds needed more review and we made the switch after MM5. He placed into Saxon 7/6.
kiana
I would expect 8/7 in that case but yes, do the placement test. I wouldn't be surprised by one either up or down.
