Hunter
I don't think these links are in this thread. If they are, sorry for the repetition. Hunter
To supplement the Wentworth First Step books in Algebra and Geometry, here are some living math books with audio support and lessons Philosophy and Fun of Algebra by Mary Everest Boole http://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/95/philosophy-and-fun-of-algebra/ Game of Logic by Lewis Carrol to accompany the geometry book http://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/136/the-game-of-logic/ And some printable Algebra Tiles for the Algebra course http://mathbits.com/MathBits/AlgebraTiles/AlgebraTiles.htm Edited October 24, 2017 by Hunter
Hunter
For some free modern math to supplement, the Newspaper in Education guides are excellent. Look at the general multi-subject elementary guides, the math guides, financial literacy, and the sports guides. http://www.nieteacher.org/#elmsmulti Edited October 24, 2017 by Hunter
Hunter
I updated The Rainbow Curriculum to add all this stuff in. I really like the Hamilton books better as a supplement to Ray's. The series is more concise and less integrated than W-S and just fills in exactly what I need it to. I basically scheduled it about a year "behind" so it often acts as review and never teaches ahead of my plans for Ray's and How to Tutor. I'll probably change my mind again soon, but this was what I was playing with this morning, instead of doing my online classes for statistics and grant writing and journalism for social change, which I must get back to now. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bwa0bk9o4pA3UVdFU18xVS0wZDg/view I added links to the Hamilton books right in the first post. happybeachbum
Thanks for this. When I was first searching for the Strayer-Upton books I would come across David Eugene Smith. I moved a while ago and many of my books had to be put in storage. So this is a real life saver.
Nom de Pluim
This has been a VERY helpful thread, thank you all! I wanted to mention that before "School Arithmetic" there are also these books: Wentworth's Primary Arithmetic: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Wentworth_s_Primary_Arithmetic/xU8beyrUho4C?hl=en I used this one with my 1st grader and it was so helpful! Work and Play with Numbers (by Wentworth): https://www.google.com/books/edition/Work_and_Play_with_Numbers/a6FDAAAAIAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0 This one looks more picture based and for younger children, perhaps kindergarten or an emerging reader in 1st grade. Hope this helps!
jsmowery
Hello. Does anyone know if the Strayer Upton series is available to print or buy in a larger, consumable format? We like this series, but making copies is getting wearisome, and there is very little space for my children to work because the pages are so small. Thanks. The Strayer Upton series is available through Rainbow Resource. I think they were designed to be nonconsumable so the students always wrote on paper. I haven't seen worksheets made to go with, but now I'm curious to see if someone has designed them!
jsmowery
Yes I have the hardcover books from Rainbow Resource. We have been using them all year and really like them. I am weary of making copies and the pages are so small my kids have issues with writing small enough. Nobody is interested in copying onto a separate paper; That just adds time and labor. I have decided to go ahead and use the Hamilton books that was posted in this thread. They look almost the identical to Stayer Upton.
