I find the Lee Valley catalogue gift section usually gives me some ideas:

These little metal models http://www.leevalley.com/en/gifts/page.aspx?p=70146&cat=54&ap=3

Pocket survival tool http://www.leevalley.com/en/gifts/page.aspx?p=71090&cat=4,104,53221&ap=2

Solar chargers for phones/gadgets http://www.leevalley.com/en/gifts/page.aspx?p=71978&cat=4,104,53221&ap=1   - so handy for camping & emergency/power outage situations

Also, this very rad flashlight (not to be confused with the cheapie dollar store flashlights) http://www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/store/fenix-pd22-flashlight.html  Ds has a similar model & whoa, that thing is small & extremely bright & durable.

If he plays an instrument, guitar picks and strings are always useful and appreciated here.

If he drives and is mechanically minded, spark plugs make good stocking stuffers.

Amazon gift cards

Gas cards

Movie gift cards

Favorite restaurant gift cards

socks, underwear, toiletries

depending on budget and their contribution: tv

take them shopping for clothes if they are fine with lack of surprises

a larger purchase of hobby type stuff: camera, gaming things, bike, sports items

I usually ask for links of what each dc wants (usually books, CDs, DVDs), if I do this early enough, they forget by Christmas and still are surprised. Win!

Hanayama Puzzles like this--ds says start with level 5, lower levels will probably be too easy

Both ds's have asked for socks this year. Ds2 joked he must be growing up to ask for socks; he's 16. He also wants cold weather running gear. Both got their big Christmas gift early: ds1 (19yo) got a Nutribullet (he lives away), ds2 got a nice new chair for his computer desk.

Stainless steel water bottle like Hydroflask.

An historian friend of mine wrote a wonderful (really, it is!) book about the last battle of WWII--it got great reviews, and I'm so proud of him! (Bonus: The teacher guy on Pretty Little Liars is his son--which may or may not be an endorsement--LOL!!)

The Last Battle

Do they like war stuff? Band of Brothers boxed set of dvds is quite good.

SWB's 3 volumes of history are really good reads, if they like history, and didn't use them in homeschooling!

  • 3 weeks later...

I keep looking at these!  How much were they?  ...I think they're going to be on the gift list this year.   :)

On Amazon, they are around $15.

Maybe less at Radio Shack?

My oldest in a first apartment is going to get a freezer-and-pantry stocking (not a Christmas sock, rather an ice chest and big box of groceries). That will be appreciated and so though it's weird, it will make a great gift.

Not sure about my others. Thanks for starting this thread, OP, I hope to take some suggestions from it!

Oh, I just put that book in my cart. Thank you, ds might find that interesting.

Getting some great ideas on here -- thanks!

Other suggestions:

Wool Socks (Smartwool are great, but there are other brands too).  They have traditional thicker ones, but also thinner ones.

A calendar

Gift certificate to local movie theater

My son liked the Every Man Jack body products I got him one year.  I believe they're all natural ingredients;  they had a nifty little travel kit, which is what I got him.

Anything like this as one possibility?

I'm thinking you may need to ask them to create a wish list on Amazon of books they are interested in.

I had the young men and teen in my life make Amazon wish lists this year. It has made life so much easier. Matter of fact, I'm done with them because I went through their lists, added what I wanted to my cart and clicked "buy". Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.   Now just to figure out what to get my parents.....sigh....

Great ideas! I also thought about an remote started for ds' car, esp as it's nearing deep freeze temps. Ds20 mentioned that he wants a shot gun microphone for his camera (who knew?)- if that is useful to anyone else with a movie making wannabe.

Spryte, I just discovered Wm Shakespear's Star Wars. - there's a hardback trilogy that would make a great gift.

lol I got my sis to make me an Amazon wish list. Now I've decided what to get her. I need to figure out my parents! They have never sent me an Amazon wish list and usually act like there's nothing in particular they want so I have to get creative.

Someone needs to start a parental gift thread. Mine don't do Amazon or any other online shopping, they say they don't want anything for Christmas and mean it, and last year I literally got creative and made something for them but this year I'm at a loss for even that.

Thinking outside the box is a requirement when it comes to parental gift giving. I got my dad a Fitbit for his birthday this year. Something he would never have considered for himself but he absolutely loves that thing. So it's stuff like that (something they would never think of) I need to come up with but instead I'm coming up with a big fat zero.
