marynamo
We would like to use a hands-on science curriculum or books for 7 and 8th grade. Any recommendations? Anyone used The Rainbow Science by Beginnings publishing? would love some help please.
Tess in the Burbs
My son used Rainbow 1 last year. I added more reading to it(Tiner books) and had him write out all vocal words as well. It did teach him to independently set up an experiment and write out his process. However, he didn't want to do year 2. Can't say why, but he asked to do something else this year. I thought year 1 was great and he did the entire thing on his own, I only checked his notebook from time to time or if he had questions. I thought it had some fun experiments. dauphin
If it's in your budget at all, supercharged science. I can hand DD the DVD and materials and let her go for the most part...
FriedClams
We tried TOPS and it was a huge fail. My kids called it "cut and paste science". We did the astronomy book so maybe others are better. We're back to BJU, which is super meaty, and we add in all the labs and more fun stuff.
RootAnn
We're using The Rainbow this year. It is very easy to accelerate, IMO, because the text part is very succinct and the real "teaching" is in the labs. You could do Year 1 & Year 2 in one year, but it would be pricey because of the lab kits. So far, my dd#1 is handling it fine. (Dd#2 is young & not science-minded, so she's another story.) It could be too light for a science-lover.
