Science: (YE) What are you using and why?

Recommended Posts

Have you looked at the God's Design series? (from AiG :leaving:)   ;)  My oldest boy did one of the chemistry books (Properties of Matter) last year, and did it mostly on his own.  We did other science together, but he was very comfortable reading the text, answers questions, and setting up activities on his own.  My two oldest will be doing one of the physics books together this year (along with some TOPS units, which I think would work out well for the ages you are looking for.  TOPS does not go into origins, or any creation/evolution issues, at least in the units I've used.)

We're in our third year of BJU online science. Is very thorough, the teacher is great, it's engaging, and the kids love it. We started this year with a different approach, but my kids begged for BJU. I combine kids on a grade level, but each had own set of books and tests.

What grade level did you choose? Is the online a set time each week? I am interested in this.

My 6th grader is using some of the Wonders of Creation books (The Ocean Book, The Weather Book, etc) and Tiner's books this year. Winter Promise schedules them for him and adds projects and experiments. They're not full curricula on their own, and I'd expect to use at least 4 a year. Master Books has guides for both, and Memoria Press has guides for the latter.

Another option not mentioned is the 101 series. Chemistry 101, Biology 101, and such. They are listed as high school level, but they're pretty light for high school and would need fleshed out for a whole HS credit.

Shepherd Science is another high school level option. You could slow it down and spread it across two years.

I go with the older kid's grade. My kids are 15 months apart and both are solid academically, so we do most subjects together.

Its basically a subscription with streaming. There isn't an actual class, but videos.

The downside, its expensive. My kids are science super nerds, so its worth it for us. The usually run a $99 sale for the videos in December. I tried to convince my kids to wait, but no luck.

My oldest used the first module of Apologia General Science before Wile's elementary book came out. He liked it (and that's the boring module!). It could be used for the grades you're talking about. It's meant for 7th, but an advanced 5th grader would have no problem.

The only reason I switched last year was because the elementary book was able to be used with all 3 of my kids at once, and my 4th grader wasn't bored. Next year in 6th, I'll split my oldest out, probably finishing General Science, since he liked it. I like Dr. Wile's books better than the Fulbright Apologia Elementary books.

Well, I'm just going to answer your question here:

We are using Apologia Astromony for my 6th,5th and 3rd graders. Why? Because I'd heard good things about it, I could do it with all of them and I needed to do something. We have been very weak in science up till now. We are enjoying it.

My son has just started Apologia's General Science and I think it might be what you are looking for.  It is independent and much more challenging that Dr. Wile's Science in the Beginning.  I also purchased the lab kit so my son can find all the supplies he needs and do the experiments on his own.

Exactly what my ds11.9 is doing with Apologia General Science!

mommyto4, I notice that your 7th and 5th graders' curricula are very similar to my two boys'. We are doing DM 1 plus Jacob's algebra, MOH 2, Apologia General Science. Ds11 is doing Module 2 now. He does it independently with the textbook, student notebook and a kit. When did you start L'Art de Lire? Does each level last a school year?

Sorry for the hijack.
