Cinder
What? I'm confused. If it's vegan how would it taste like fish oil? Oh wait. You actually tried it and it *does* taste like fish oil. Is that it? Ewww!
Dana
:) As long as they keep the original, it's good :) That one might be good for cooking fish....

Cinder
It says it is vegan but it has a weird off flavor to it. Bummer. Must be the seaweed. All the other ingredients look so innocent. :p
Slartibartfast
Bummer. Must be the seaweed. All the other ingredients look so innocent. :p AHA!!!! That must be it! It would probably be good for cooking fish. On toast it is bad.

sbgrace
That sounds ick. They recently added actual fish oil (tilapia I think) to the milk I purchase for one of my sons. He's allergic. Annoying.

mamaraby
Yup, probbly the algal oil added in the mix. They're doing it because Omega-3 is the "in" thing hence the fish oil in milk. I think at one point SmartBalance had an omega-3 one listed as vegan that actually had fish oil in it. Oops! If you're looking for a spread with Omega-3 that doesn't taste like fish, the Smart Balance Flaxseed Oil one isn't fishy. A tad grassy, but not bad and still vegan. hsingscrapper
Thanks for the heads up. There are tastier ways to get Omegas.
ktgrok
My parents bought something like this once, with omega 3's in it. I threw it away, thinking it had gone bad. Nope, turns out, that's just how it tastes. Yuck. Makes your toast taste like Fish Oil! *barf* What were they thinking!
hornblower
Good to know! I only use Earth Balance for baking but actually I'm always on the lookout for extra omega 3 so I might have been tempted by it. We have mental health issues and the right epa/dha ratio is hard to find in vegan formulas.
ktgrok
Smart Balance Light with flaxseed is vegan and has no fishy taste, but you'd have to use earth balance still for baking. I think that is the one I thought tasted rotten, and threw away.

lexi
Butter, people, butter from grass-fed (pastured) cows. Some of us don't have that option. Life threatening dairy allergies here. It is very frustrating when changes are made to the one thing that is our only alternative.
zoobie
Butter, people, butter from grass-fed (pastured) cows. I miss butter! Dairy makes my nursing infant's colon bleed, so I'm not going to eat it at the moment. I'm stuck with Earth Balance soy free. They have a new organic coconut spread that looks intriguing and is soy and dairy free. I haven't found it locally yet.
Jenny in Florida
Can you fool yourself into believing you are eating a delicious fish sandwich? :D Probably not an especially attractive option for the vegans.
mamaraby
Butter, people, butter from grass-fed (pastured) cows. Yeah, no. Pasture fed cows aren't magical enough to address the concerns of the kinds of folks who used Earth Balance. Nice try, though.

Slartibartfast
Butter, people, butter from grass-fed (pastured) cows. Allergies, allergies people. People don't eat earth balance for no reason, it is expensive and you cannot get it at the farmer's market. There is no point to it without allergies or being vegan. PrairieSong
Oh noooo...this is how I make our mashed potatoes, and other stuff requiring butter, vegan for our vegan dd who also has a dairy allergy. Ugh..I do not want fishy tasting potatoes.

I have some of the soy free kind atm and it is the same as usual.
hornblower
An aside but I think few people realize that most margarines are not vegan. Becel for ex has one variety that is vegan, the others all contain milk ingredients. If you're trying to avoid dairy in a spread, it's not as easy as just avoiding butter. I'm stuck with Earth Balance soy free. They have a new organic coconut spread that looks intriguing and is soy and dairy free. I haven't found it locally yet. After I figured out you guys were all vegans or had other compelling reasons for "no butter", I thought of homemade spreads, i.e. avocado or hummus. Or does it have to resemble butter in appearance? For those who mix it in mashed potatoes, someone told me they were creaming turnips and mixing them in....sounds interesting at least. :)

Becel vegan is vegan as far as ingredients but it's owned by unilever which does conduct animal testing on some of their products (not this margarine though) and is thus avoided by some. Slartibartfast
It is only one variety of earth balance that is gross, the other kinds are fine. I posted this thread to warn people away from the icky kind.
hornblower
I use vegan margarine in baking, on toast, in sandwiches. We also use other spreads but I grew up on european rye bread and butter and still love that as a snack :)

Many bake with coconut oil if they cannot use butter. hornblower
? Is there a reason that you don't think people should use the alternative that they are used to using? Many of my vegan buds are loopy about coconut in lieu of margarine because it's not as processed and doesn't have "chemicals". I think it's a naturalistic fallacy but anyway.... Liz CA
Polish. I was born there :) Norwegian Ancestors here and rye bread is a staple. However, where I live in CA, I currently have one store that carries the authentic rye I am used to. Perhaps you are luckier in Canada.
