Hello!  Does anyone have a music history/appreciation book or curriculum that you'd recommend for a 1 semester high school credit?  It would go along with music lessons for the credit.

Thanks,

Karen

Music: An Appreciation by Kamien. Older editions are cheap. Also, you can sometimes find CDs to go along with it. I'd look for those first, then get a matching book. Here's a 9th edition website for flashcards and free quizzes, if you want those: http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/0073526568/student_view0/index.html  There are probably websites for other editions.

Also, there is a course called How to Listen to and Understand Great Music from the Great Courses series. http://www.ebay.com/itm/How-to-Listen-to-and-Understand-Great-Music-3rd-Ed-48-CDs-Great-Courses-VGC-/181491299432?pt=US_Audiobooks&hash=item2a41b97468   You might also find this in your library, Amazon, etc.  All editions are good; I've heard both 1st and 2nd, and I'm not sure there was any change besides the cover.

Oak meadow has a syllabus using this.

We're doing Intro to Music History and Appreciation this year using How to Listen to and Understand Great Music and Understanding the Fundamentals of  Music (Teaching Company courses) this year.  Next year we're doing Music History II with Discovering Music and Exploring America's Musical Heritage.
