Farrar
I don't feel like he's blah exactly. I can't decide if I like him or not, honestly. He's so very different from my picture of Jamie from the book both physically and in attitude. I feel like he's playing him more hesitant when in the book he was more forceful. It was obvious in the book that he was a natural leader, but less so from the show. But given where they're ending the season, I wonder if maybe next season he'll be a more forceful figure. Farrar
Oh, and the time jumps in the wedding episode were insane in a bad way. We finally got some other perspectives though so I'm not sure if I should complain though.
prairiewindmomma
I don't like how her relationship with her first husband is portrayed on tv. On tv it seems passionate and loving....as compared to the books where you realize that they are strained in trying to connect/reconnect to each other. She and her first husband have moments of restrained lovemaking as compared to the passionate experience she has with Jamie.
Shannon in TN
Now that we're through with the first half of the season, I think I'm going to have to go back and re-read the first book.
Farrar
I actually liked how they showed her relationship with Frank. In the book, I thought they seemed like they were in love - yes, reconnecting, but happily. And they clearly cared for each other and shared a certain outlook. I think the problem may be that it's harder to show the sudden passion she feels for Jamie on the screen. I don't know... We'll see. She does try to run back to Frank once more... Farrar
Okay, I watched yesterday's... Much better. Finally, another perspective! But what an obnoxious point at which to end the action. I thought we'd get slightly further on, to the rescue, the controversial beating, and the reconciliation and that *that* would be the mid-season climax. But when I saw how slow paced the wedding episode was, I did start to wonder and then this back and forth... It's interesting that the episode focused on the appearance of the man at the window when that's something that has never been resolved in the books. Word Nerd
I think one of the reasons the narration is so annoying is that the actress isn't a good narrator. She's OK in the role, but when she narrates she sounds rather flat and robotic.
Farrar
Yeah, the continued narration still bugged me. I liked that they played up her anger at the attack where they kill the deserters, but I felt like a slightly longer exchange between her and Jamie would have done a better job.
Happy
Interesting. I don't find the narration annoying at all. The book is written in first person (which I do often find annoying.) To me, the narration makes sense. I do think it's interesting that the 'Highlander' was brought into the story more in this episode. We are supposed to believe that it's Jamie--yet from the books we know he can't go through the stones, right? Who is it? I wonder what Herself has to say about that... I enjoyed the series--I think they've done a good job of portraying the book. April 4th is my dh's birthday. I told him we already had plans for his birthday. ;)
Farrar
I originally had a theory that it was Jem. Of course, I also had a theory that Jem would become the first pm of an independent Scotland, thus fulfilling the Fraser prophesy, but current events nixed that one. Farrar
Well, clearly I was wrong. ;) Dh is like, what the heck is this book/show. I tried to get him to watch the first one, but he was like, maybe in the middle of the night when I've run out of other series I only want to half pay attention to while I work. There's no way he'd ever read it. But fair's fair, I'm not going to be reading any of his Rome historical fiction or any of his thick biographies of obscure political figures any time soon either. My husband watches the show with me, and he likes it. He wouldn't have searched it out on his own because he hasn't read the books and it wouldn't have been on his radar screen if it weren't on mine. Well that's very blah. Why create a sense of mystery and then just say what it is? Sigh. I find Herself very trying when I read what she's said about various things, which is why I often avoid. Some writers are interesting when they talk about their process and their work, but others not so much.

Mandylubug
I was highly disappointed in this last episode. I felt like they zoomed through some scenes and added other scenes that just didn't add to the story line in my opinion. I also rewatched the Garrison Commander episode last night and just don't like how they did that one the first half...I am glad I haven't read the book again within the past 2 months or I would be REALLY twitchy. I feel like they have skimmed the Jamie relationship and have compounded the Frank relationship that just wasn't that grand...

I have in other threads stated my big big dislike for DG and the things she says/has said, so much so that I wasn't going to read her books. In the end the show made me read the first book. Except I will admit I skimmed large parts. It just didn't capture me. I will continue to watch the show, but probably won't read more of the books. If you want to read books with a strong female character named Claire, sexual tension and a VERY nice author, I suggest Julia Spencer-Flemmings Claire Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne books. They are mysteries though.

Too much build-up, hype, picking apart of books/characters/author (not without cause or reason, just saying if I'd discussed all this detail before I'd read them, it wouldn't be the same). I'm glad I read them several years ago. lol. I will check out your suggestion, thanks!
Farrar
I think the bOOks bug me a bit because I liked that she was a slightly shapely woman in the books. But they cast a thin woman instead, which is just so Hollywood, you know? I'm not usually bothered by the differences between the book and movie/TV show of things - I think they should be different to use their media well usually. However, this is one of those things that just makes me a bit sad.

I think part of the booKs thing is that Claire is supposed to be a modern woman from a world of plenty while the historic Highlanders are not. Even in good years, they don't eat the nutritional foods that they should. So Jamie always admired her figure, especially her "fat" bum. Having to squish her bOOks flat to her chest to give her some semblance of a bosom is counter to that image.
