teachermom2834
I'm trying to make some upgrades in my kitchen but definitely can't replace appliances that still work. I've got a double wall oven, electric coil cooktop, and range hood in the old avocado green color. I've got a white refrigerator and dishwasher. Both old and a bit beat up but functional. I'm thinking of trying to paint them. Figuring I don't have much to lose if it doesn't look great. They already look old and are mismatched. Any experience or tips? We aren't very handy around the house but I do paint.
Tap
Never used it but I don't think it would really work for kitchen appliances unless it says it was designed for that purpose. The stove top seems like it would scratch if a hot pan got drug across it. I would worry about the heat affecting the paint on the oven. Either by making it peal or turning colors. Also if the area around the knobs is painted and you have any markings around the knobs, you will lose those markings. If the glass is painted or has any color between the glass, you won't be able to paint that. The fridge will have too much texture to look right. The dishwasher may have an inset front panel and white trim. I would wonder about if the glossy panel will take the paint. I would worry about the paint not sticking and pealing off. Again, you will loose any markings around the knob, unless you plan to leave that part alone. But having a white knob area and stainless lower part doesn't seem like it would look good to me. Myra
Years ago when we were renting, the white fridge door had rust spots so I painted it with paint from the hardware store specifically for that purpose. Been a while so I can't tell you what brand or type of paint. However, it worked and looked great - held up for the next few years and easy to clean with soap and water. Whereneverever
No, but I'm planning on trying it. http://www.liquidstainlesssteel.com this one says it's ok for appliances.
IdahoHomeschooler
The paint won't work on the stove and ovens, as they would need a high heat paint. The dishwasher panel could probably be painted and look ok. Not great, but ok. The fridge would have too much texture for the stainless paint. They have appliance epoxy paint, that is usually white or almond. It works fairly well on fridges, and would work on the dishwasher. It is not designed for use on hot appliances, though. If you are determined to paint, avoid the stainless paint and at least use appliance epoxy. You may not think that you much to lose, but crappy paint can make the whole situation *much* worse. Have you checked craigslist? You can find some good deals on appliances from people upgrading from white to stainless. Habitat Restore or used appliance stores also can have good deals. The best upgrades I have seen, where existing appliances or plumbing fixtures had to stay, are the upgrades that work with the fixtures, instead of pretending the fixtures are different. If you can't beat em, join em. Painting cabinets or walls the color of the offensive fixture, helps the fixture not stand out. Choosing coordinating fabric for curtains helps pull it together. Find some kitschy 70's Pyrex or dishes to accessorize. Embrace the avocado, because it will eventually be back in style ;)

This is the one I'm looking at. It says it is for use on appliances and gets reasonably good reviews. It does say it will discolor around then burners on the stovetop but the oven should be okay. Yes, Thomas' Stainless SteelTM will withstand surface temperatures up to 300 F - so it's fine for your - - gas and electric range and range top - oven door - glass oven door - wall oven - vent hood - most fireplaces It's not normal paint. :)
gardenmom5
I've done some reading on this. go for quality. for the stove - use a high heat paint. it won't be "stainless", but one does come in gray. people have also said for dishwashers/etc. they had better results with a stainless metallic self-adhesive film. I did most of my reading on product reviews on amazon. rustoleum has stainless paint, as well as high heat paint. you can read reviews on amazon, then go buy it at home depot where you can see it up close and personal. gardenmom5
Embrace the avocado, because it will eventually be back in style ;) Oh, I hope not. My mil painted a bunch of *mahogany* furniture avocado green during the hideous decade known as the 70's. (that was one ugly decade. and I thought it was ugly then.) Lara in Colo
I don't know about this paint, but dh uses high heat paint for his engines-- it comes in a spray can. http://www.vhtpaint.com/http://www.vhtpaint.com/
