Fun Summer Fiction

Recommended Posts

Can we make a list of fun fiction books that would be good reads for summer?

They could be good independent reads or work as a read aloud.

So what are some that are silly and fluffy??

I would love books both for me and my elementary-aged kiddos.

I want to find some that are "off the beaten path" and something new or different.

For you. My favorites this year in the "true sugary fluff" category were Where'd You Go Bernadette, Fangirl, Attachments, Austinland, The Rosie Project, and What Alice Forgot.  The Dovekeepers can't really be described as sugary fluff but it knocked my socks off so I'm mentioning it.

My summer list is attempting to be "smart but still light".  It includes: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Howard's End is on the Landing, Beginners Greek, and I Capture the Castle.

For kids:

Fortunately, the Milk

The Mysterious Benedict Society

Howl's Moving Castle

Momo

The Spiderwick Chronicles (and the assorted guide books that accompany them)

The Search for WondLa

Thimble Summer

Gone-Away Lake

Tumtum and Nutmeg

For adults:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Night Circus

The Snow Child (because it gets miserably hot here in the summer, and I need an escape)

Has anyone read An Abundance of Catherines by John Greene?  We were thinking of reading one of his novels as a family but don't want to read TFIOS - I worked for years in pediatric oncology and those kind of books depress me (I felt fulfillment in that field in the beginning, but after several years, it begins to wear on you). I know there's Finding Alaska, too, but it isn't exactly upbeat either.

Also, I know it's been asked before and I've read the back threads, but book recommendations for teen girls that aren't mainly romance, angst or fantasy would be a appreciated, too. We aren't opposed to those genres, DFD just don't enjoy them  yet the YA market seems full of them. I know she is old enough for adult stuff and she does read classics during the year but they are "work" for her. I'd like for her to have more things to just enjoy during the summer.
