pitterpatter
DD is finally to a level where I think she could handle assigned reading for history. I'm looking for a good list of early readers/chapter books for Early American/Modern history. I'd like to come up with a preliminary list this summer, so I don't fall off the wagon when we're in the thick of things this fall. I have the list from Bookshark, but it doesn't include "I Can Read" titles like "Sam the Minuteman," etc. (The list is for third grade, which is probably why. DD will be in second grade.) Or, does anyone know where I can find a list of the "I Can Read" titles sorted by historical time period? Amazon's search doesn't do a good job and neither does the "I Can Read" website. I'm not looking for "Magic Tree House" and similar, but titles that are more literary in nature. I hoping for a good mix of short one-day books and longer books (that may take up to a couple of weeks to read). Thanks!! ETA: This is Bookshark's list, which also includes books recommended by Beautiful Feet and History Odyssey. I want to find some that deal with early modern history in other parts of the world. Grade 3 Readers Regular Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims Pocahontas and the Strangers The Matchlock Gun Meet Thomas Jefferson Phoebe the Spy Meet George Washington Robert Fulton, Boy Craftsman Sarah, Plain and Tall The Courage of Sarah Noble The Cabin Faced West The Bears on Hemlock Mountain A Lion to Guard Us Om-kas-toe
pitterpatter
Oh, grr! Where did my post go? Trying again. Been working on this today. Discovered that a good many of the "I Can Read" level 3 and 4 books are historical fiction. jrstarfleetacademy
Hi, I'm not sure if these would be below your DD's level but the Rookie Biographies series does have books on historical figures. We found ours at the library. Here is a partial list http://www.scholastic.com/tbw/quickSearch.do?N=0+%24&fq=Series%3A%5ERookie+Biographies%5E&Ntk=TBW_QuickSearch_SI&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial#cart/cleanup Hope this helps. I have a DD, age 8, that is a struggling reader. These books are short and to the point.

In2why
Look at the series "on my own history" They are at that reading level and fictional stories from history. Sadly my library doesn't catalog them as a series but if you Google on my own history's the list will pop up. They are very comparable to the I can Read level 4. pitterpatter
I compiled a list of historical fiction titles for Early Modern Times on my blog, if anyway is interested. It's heavy on Early America. I would love to find more selections for the rest of the world for from about 1600 to 1850. http://bluehouseschool.blogspot.com/2014/06/early-modern-times-historical-fiction.html PS - If there's one listed that is horrible or really not appropriate or off time-wise, let me know. I haven't read any of them yet. PPS - Anyone know the time for Daniel's Duck? From the samples, I take it to be after 1850, but I'm not sure.
