Hi Jane, thanks for advertising this! I really appreciate it.

It's going to be great. We are going to have a county wide NSF day in late September early October and do these kits with the rocket team assisting. DH will probably expand on the idea, and if weather holds, we are going to launch at least one proto-type payload.

For everyone interested, most of these NSF funded 4-H days are NOT just for current 4-H members. They involve community outreach in the sciences and while they may be funded by grants from your state U, they are normally open to any youth in the county between the age ranges advertised. We require an RSVP so that we know exactly how many to plan for and can make sure our facility will be big enough to host the group. Others are literally "whoever shows up."

These kits are not limited to purchase by only 4-H leaders. So, you should be able to go to your state's 4-H store (online 4-H merchandise sold by your state U) and purchase the kits. They are usually created to accommodate 5 students and cost around $22.00-25.00 each.

Our 4H wildlife project had a booth at last year's NSF day, talking about the butterfly life cycle and showing off lots of "please touch me" bones & rocks & stuff. It was great fun. The local CC had a booth where they were showing sick/well body parts, dissecting livestock organs, and showing microscope slides on a big monitor. There was info on pest issues, water issues, cool science experiments, and a paramedic section where they would bandage your "broken" arm for free. AND it was free to attend. If you have a chance to go, don't miss it!

This is probably the wrong place to ask....

Did you go on that trip yet? What happened with the kid?

Yes, and I posted a long update which fell off the front page last week. But, if you do a thread search for rocket team I think it will show up. The boy will not be returning next year. However, the young lady that had to take a year off for her school schedule is enthusiastically returning and we are thrilled to have her!
