AllBoys
My son is scheduled to take the APUSH exam this week and he is only getting about 50% of his mcq's correct. He usually gets 9's on his essays. Someone said he should not take it. What do you think?
unsinkable
Have you seen this? http://appass.com/calculators/us?curve=2006 You can input your practice scores and get an idea of your score. HTH
AllBoys
Unsinkable - Thank you so much! I had not seen that but it is very encouraging.
Muttichen
Are the 9's on his essays from an online teacher or have you graded real essays based on the scoring guidelines at AP Central? Some teachers score kids much higher on essays than they would score on the exam. I would have him do a real released exam if you have one and score the essays using the scoring guidelines. If he is really getting 9's on the essays, he should be fine. As you can see from the scoring calculator linked above, you don't need to get nearly all of the multiple choice questions right to get a 5. My dd has been pretty consistently scoring about 75 % on the MCQ. With that score, she just needs 6's on the essays to get a 5.
teachermom2834
I know someone who had to cancel scores after the test. There is a window of time you can write to CB and ask them to cancel scores, I think. If he has made it this far I would have him take it. AllBoys
Muttichen - The scores are from his online teacher. As far as the MCQ's he seems to be having the most problem with really paying attention to what the question is asking.
Elisabet1
A 50% is passing on an AP exam. Go find the scoring guide for this before you discount it. I assume you already paid for it, nothing to lose by taking it.
Elisabet1
Also, we did cancel a score before. It was well after the test. I mean, she had had the scores and some time had passed. Finally, we decided to cancel it. It was very simple.
Elisabet1
Use the above calculator and you will see how low the percents can be to get high final score. I think your son will be fine.
Harriet Vane
It's really not a big deal to cancel a score. There is no risk to taking the AP. Have him try--if the score is lower than three, just have it canceled.
Muttichen
You can find past essay questions and scoring guidelines here: http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_information/2089.html. Dd has been looking at essay questions and making a quick outline with a thesis and points to cover, then looking at the scoring guidelines. I'd definitely have him go ahead and take it!
