You can get a polishing compound in the electronics dept at most stores. It will help greatly.

Likek which one?  I just bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/Agaia-Scratch-Out-Repair-Tube/dp/B00B50V06C/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397514820&sr=1-3&keywords=scratch+out

and unless I used it incorrectly, it didn't work.  I wiped the CD clean, added a little dab of compound, and used a soft paper towel and rubbed it in, in a circular motion...and it didn't help at all.

Discs have a layer of plastic covering the data layer, and scratches in the plastic make it difficult for the lasers to read the data. If the scratches aren't too deep, they can be polished off. If you look at a CD on its side you can get a better sense of the anatomy.

Amazingly applying plain rubbing alcohol has worked on some of ours.

Scratch Out has worked on some deeper scratched ones.  The directions do say to use a very soft cloth and go in circular motions from the center.

I took a game to a video store to be repaired and it came out even worse.
