SarahW
There was an interesting discussion about learning other languages a few weeks ago (in the thread about international education). Just recently I came across this blog, Loving Language. Under the category multilingualism there are good posts about the experience of multilingualism in America and the monolingualism that America is known for. I found it very interesting, and sometimes quite eye-opening. In other news, my local library system got a subscription to Mango, and I already have 8 lessons completed!
Tress
Re: Mango! :hurray: PS, I have to say that every time I see your signature, I have to laugh about your Dutch curriculum 'Je kan me wat'. Please advice your kids not to use that phrase towards Dutch adults :D. Is it working well?
SarahW
It's funny, when I first found Je Kan Me Wat I asked my husband, "Hey, have you seen this program, Je...Kan..me...Wat?" "What?!" "Je...Kan..me...Wat" Yep, pretty sure I pronounced that right. "What are you talking about?" "Je...Kan..me...Wat, it's a Dutch program." "It's called what?" "Je...Kan..me...Wat" "Ok, don't ever say that." "But that's the name of this program. Je...Kan..me...Wat" "Are you serious?" "Yes" "Let me see that. Oh. Ok. Just don't say that to people." "Why?" It's going good. The only problem is that it's not "open-and-go" so DH has issues forming discrete lessons. I'd make lesson plans, but I don't understand all the parts very well myself. I suppose I could use it more, I understand enough to self-teach from it. But at the moment Mango is fun. But my DH is from the region of boers, so I've never learned fancy words like ontmoeten before, lol.
4KookieKids
Ok... So I'm not dutch, and I'll bite -- you have me very curious! What does Je Kan Me Wat actually mean?
SarahW
Ok... So I'm not dutch, and I'll bite -- you have me very curious! What does Je Kan Me Wat actually mean? My DH could not think of an exact translation. But I think that the politest way to translate it is "Are you kidding me?" Except use your imagination to say that ruder. That's what it means. But it's the best full-immersion FREE Dutch course on the web!
Tress
Seems like an odd name for a language learning program. Yes, it is! But at least it is spelled correctly. It's all the rage in the Netherlands to use 'cute, invented, preferably English sounding'-spelling for children's programs......ehhhh, I mean: kidz programzzzz. Drives me bonkers. So, just be glad they didn't call it 'Juh ken me wat' :smilielol5: .
Penguin
If When I get my Danish where it needs to be, I am going to turn my attention to Dutch. I have already bought the books :001_wub: We frequently travel to the Netherlands, and I have always loved "everything Dutch." I wonder if Dutchophile is a word like Anglophile or Francophile?! I guess that it would be, even though I have never encountered it, LOL. edited for clarity
umsami
My Arabic is really bad. There are a bunch of words that are really similar…the words for heart and dog….the words for pigeon and bathroom… you can imagine the mistakes I make. :)
