Dailynn
I have been using HOD Spelling List 2 with my 2nd grader. We are almost finished with it and are looking for something else because I don't want to just move into ditaction. I am looking for a workbook type spelling. I like BJU spelling but the price of the TG is too much. I also like Steckt-Vaughn but their TG is very expensive too. Whatever we get, I don't want the lessons to have missed spelled words. So, knowing all of that, what do you suggest?
Dolphin
Have you tried searching spelling? There are some great in depth spelling threads out there. Phonetic Zoo and AAS are my favs. others are: Spalding Apples and pears Spelling workout Sequential Spelling CLE Rod and Staff http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/507545-another-way-to-do-aas-1/?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5530327 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/499379-spelling-workout-vs-other-programs/?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5529081 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/507474-apples-and-pears-spelling/?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5528026 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/397302-my-ongoing-review-on-phonetic-zooolder-child-independent-spelling-program/page-2?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5526278 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/501226-new-spelling-program-coming-out-this-springspelling-you-see/?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5517771 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/505516-one-spelling-to-rule-them-all/?hl=spelling&do=findComment&comment=5511809 You are pretty new with 10 posts. :) Welcome! Here is a variety of threads on spelling, I tried to pick ones that had 10 or more replies. I think you should feel like an almost spelling expert after those (or at least know the range of programs out there) I hope that helps. Chloe
We really like Apples and Pears, but I would not use it if you have a natural speller. It is a workbook, but it's not meant to be independent at all.

FO4UR
3rd grade is a good time to start Apples & Pears. Each lesson builds up to a 4 sentence dictation. I think these lessons count as spelling and a large portion of our writing instruction. For a 3rd grader, I'd keep up oral narrations and copywork outside of Apples & Pears. If you want inexpensive, look into Rod & Staff.
