Guest jnskrtmom
Hi, all, I have spent a lot of time reading TWTM, since when our first child was 18 months, as I then began to sense the call to homeschool. He's now 4, and seems ready to start doing some more "formal" phonics, etc., as he seems very motivated to read. Just looking for some feedback/wisdom, as we gently step into the water: Feedback particularly around a good math program to start with---not just in PK, but early elem. too. I am considering Saxon K(for this year), or possibly BJU math. I am also drawn to the "idea" of Singapore math, but fear it may be too abstract too early. Horizons is also a possibility for kindergarten. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
TheRoadLessTraveled22
Our family didn't like Saxon math, because it was too much like going to school (learn it for the test and then regurgitate it) We used a lot of different things growing up, one thing that I will recommend is Math-U-See. It is a fantastic program that is well equips the parent and the student. It helps you teach your kid (there are videos and lesson plans, workbooks and different tools to use) I wish we would have used it sooner! The other great thing is, you can get most of the books used in good condition for a great price. I hope my 2 cents helped, it is not that we are opposed to the people that used Saxon (because I know that it is the King of math in the homeschool world) It is just not the type of learning we wanted. Figure out what you want for your child, our goal was to cultivate life long learning and this math helped. Hope this helped!
73349
Welcome! We have not found Singapore to be too abstract. It works well with manipulatives and offers plenty of pictures as examples. I think it's also more visually appealing than Saxon. Just to throw another option out there, if you haven't heard of Miquon, it's fun and hands-on. We used SM Essentials K B and the first-grade Extra Practice book first, and now he's doing Miquon and finding it easy and enjoyable in kindergarten. (Miquon is only 2-3 years of books, so we'll go back to Singapore afterward.)
TheRoadLessTraveled22
Here is something I just found in a random part of the forum, hope it helps! http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/groups/119-free-curriculum-for-the-price-of-printing/ resources (I haven't used them, but they look fine)
