I went to high school with a boy with that name. But not that one. ha!

When I have time, I am planning to watch some shows on Dramafever. I just haven't gotten around to it yet -- arg!

Don't do it, Stripe. Better to stay away from it than to become a Korean Drama Addict (KDA).

So did you subscribe? The trick is NOT to subscribe so that all those commercials turn you off to watching more.

Ha ha, I was a Japanese drama addict in high school, and a Mexican telenovela addict in college so...

And, no, I didn't subscribe.

I just got back from vacation and have to catch up on Married, Not Dating from Friday and Saturday! So far I really like it.

I just finished that one.  It was so good.  I already miss it.  I loved the music in that one and I think I downloaded all the songs.  But I have Nine Plus Boys to look forward to now.  It's the next drama after Married, Not Dating.  Hopefully, it'll be another cute one.

This thread is why I  :001_wub: the HIve!

I currently don't have anything to watch until fall tv starts up next month so I've been looking for something and this thread popped up on the chat board again. I'm currently on episode 17 of Boys Before Flowers and I just started watching on Tuesday! I can't get enough! I'm totally invested in the characters. I'm crying, laughing, and getting so furious that I want to punch a wall (why don't you just TALK to each other!?!?!) Anyway, my oldest dd and I are really loving it and developing serious crushes on the actors. I have a thing for Lee Bin Ho now and my dd is really into two of the other guys (I don't know their names though). It's become my new obsession. So thanks Hive!

ETA: And all I have to say is that if Lee Min Ho every shows up at my door with a star and moon necklace, dh better be worried!  :auto:

Chelli, the lack of communication is so common and frustrating!  But without it there would be no story, lol!  I'm watching You're Beautiful with my girls and we're having a blast.  I've been thinking about what we'll watch next . . .

But it's SOOOO frustrating!  :cursing:

Quick question: In Boys Before Flowers, my dd and I noticed that the main girl and her family have horrible table manners by western standards (talking with mouth full, too much food in their mouth, etc.). Is that done on purpose to make it funny or is it not considered rude to do those things in Korean culture?

This thread ought to be shut down.

So is everyone just watching these on dramafever? I'm not finding much on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

And if I knew how to posts pictures here I would be posting lots of Hyun Bin. Clearly, some of you have not seen Secret Garden.

I watch on kdrama.com most of the time.  I have a few that I watch on dramafever or hulu because they save my place.  I watch Roommate on Hulu which is a variety show and a whole other rabbit trail to go down.  If I'm wanting to watch something more obscure or older I go to kdrama.tv.  I used to use gooddrama all the time but the site is no longer safe. It has a lot of bugs.

I like the subtitles on Viki but I have a hard time with it if I have to step away from my show for a while.

And Secret Garden is a good one.  Ha Ji Won is my favorite actress.  She's just so cool.

Thanks for letting me know! It's almost painful for me to watch her eat!

I like the fact that the characters actually eat in dramas.  It makes it more believable even though I get hungry for whatever they are eating.

Just like the bathroom humor.  I like that characters in my dramas actually have to use the bathroom and might have constipation (Flower Boy Raymun Shop), or irritable Bowl Syndrome (Nine Plus Boys) or have to go potty on the side of the road (various dramas) or that they might just need to throw up.  It's kind of disgusting but almost always funny.  I also like the fact that the characters actually cry with what looks like real tears.  I've heard that they actually have acting classes on how to cry.

Yeah, Secret Garden is great. I wish Hyun Bin would do some new dramas!

I also like the comments on Viki. They are often hilarious and things that I'm thinking but wouldn't say aloud. KDrama is good for certain dramas because there are a few where they are quicker at posting the subs than Viki. I know they post My Secret Hotel with subs usually before Viki has them done. I use Dramafever and Viki most because I have the apps on my phone and don't have to be on the computer to watch them.

Or on Marriage Not Dating. She poo'ed her pants! I was so grossed out at the idea at first but honestly, it was so well done that it made it a bit less gross.

I like Ha Ji Won but she got a bit too weepy for me in SG. Her fight scene in King 2 Hearts where she saves the King is pretty great though.

It's funny, bc she didn't bother me at all in SG but I have pretty much given up on K2H because of her character.  :ack2:  She just seems totally...idk...pathetic in that one, I guess.

I think I've watched something like 11 episodes.  And I stopped - it was several months ago now.  Maybe even a year.  It's still on my list and I could finish it, but I just can't stand her...

Yes, she was weepy in that one too lol. She always starts off as a strong bada$$ and then ends up crying her way through the second half. The fight scene was the stand-out to me though because she got back in touch with her inner tough-guy.

If only she'd reacted to the MIL like he did when he was being her (counting the money and asking if that was all and if she was doing payments) rather than dissolving into tears, I would've liked her character through the whole show.

Tough women are not usually popular in the Korean culture. Ha Ji Won is the only Korean actress I can think of who can perform the role of bads$$ female warrior well (and maybe Jeon Ji Hyun?), but she still needs to look somewhat feminine and vulnerable at the same time in order to gain popularity. Yeah, the same old weepy and tragic parts of K dramas even turn Koreans off sometimes. Maybe that's why many American TV shows are doing so well in Korea. :)

I agree that I do not like it when the female lead is too weepy or too weak. However, I have found many Korean dramas that had strong female leads IMO such as Master's Sun, City Hall, It's Ok; It's Love, Lie to Me, etc.

I agree but I think there have been some tougher heroines these days. Shin Min-Ah (My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Arang), Lee Min-Jung (Cunning Single Lady), Han Groo (Marriage Not Dating), Park Min-Young (City Hunter and Sungkyunwan Scandal), Kim Sun-Ah,  Yang Jin-Sung (kind of in Bride of the Century), Eunji in Answer Me, and Choi Kang-hee (Protect the Boss), Moon Chae-Won (Innocent Man), Jung Ryeo-Won (History of a Salary Man), and definitely Lee Yeon-Hee in Miss Korea did good jobs at depicting pretty strong female characters.

I'm on Mydramalist.com, too.  I'm AmicusRose over there, so come be my friend.   :D

I will go back and multiquote everything, and try again.  Oh, so frustrating.  I think I really had the explosions over my head like they have on the variety shows.  I'm fuming over here.  LOL

Forgot about Kong Hyojin! She's such an unique actress. Not considered beautiful by Korean standards but her natural and good acting magnifies her charm. Her nickname in Korea is "Kong-vely (Kong + lovely)" and she is the indisputable present queen of Korean romantic comedy shows after Kim Sun Ah.

Wow, I'm impressed with your impeccable spelling in Korean names, lol. Yes, the Confucian culture in Korea has been rapidly changing under the influence of the Western culture and media, and women's voices are becoming bigger and stronger, even in the real life.

Haha, thank you! That is a big compliment. I obviously watch with subtitles and read a lot of DramaBeans so I just have spelling memorized from that.

In an effort to not lose my replies, or be too angry if I do, I am going to reply in batches.   :001_rolleyes:

Oh the track suits too! "This was made in Italy!" I also love that they got married and had cute little kids.

Secret Garden has the best ending of all the dramas I've seen.  I loved it!  I love the actor who played Oska, Yoon Sang Hyun, and have enjoyed him in I Hear Your Voice and Gap Dong.  I loved Gap Dong, even though it seems that not a lot of people did.  I love the end credits song, too: Rush, by Every Single Day.  I was so surprised when I realized they are the same band that did the theme from

.  It's a totally different sound.

I'm a Korean so I might see these differently, but among the recent popular dramas, I strongly recommend "It's Okay That's Love", "Heirs" (Lee Min Ho), "My Love from Another Star", "I Hear Your Voice", "Nine Time Travels" (slow start but it gets better after episode 4), "The Master's Sun", "I Need Romance 2012" (my favorite), "School 2013" (if you're curious about Korean high schoolers' life), "Answer me 1997" & "Answer me 1994" (about the 90s culture) and "The God's Gift: 14 Days" (about a missing girl and her mom's struggle to save her from death). All of these are on Hulu. :)

It's Okay, That's Love is SO GOOD!  I can't get enough of the song from it:

.

Heirs, My Love from Another Star, I Hear Your Voice, The Master's sun, School 2013, Answer Me 1997, and Answer Me 1994 are all so good.  I love Answer Me 1997 a little better than 1994.  My favorite part in 1994 was when the cast from 1997 guest stared on 1994.  That bus scene, though!  LOL

I love her super fast life plan, lol! And I will never forget how to say meat in Korean after that drama. I like the scene where the kids say, "Daddy, buy meat!" over and over.

I don't think I've seen Flower Boy Next Door mentioned. It has Park Shin Hye and my favorite way for the couple to meet. I won't give it away, but it is hysterical!

Love Flower Boy Next Door.  I'm actually not a big fan of Park Shin Hye (some one please teach her to kiss, or stop giving her kissing scenes), but I adore Yoon Shi Yoon.  I was so sad when he enlisted for his 2 years service.

OK.  I am a drama addict.

Someone was wondering about more of Woo Bin's shows:

White Christmas is my favorite of his roles.  It is an 8 episode psychological thriller set in an academically advanced high school that is run like a prison.

A Gentleman's Dignity and  To the Beautiful You (based on the manga "Hana Kimi") are both good roles for him.

School 2013 is where he really shines and the bromance is epic.

For movies, he did an awesome job in "Friend:  the Legend."  But it is a pretty bloody gangster film and the sequel to a pretty epic movie that is not appropriate for children.

His upcoming movies "The Professional" and "Twenty" look good and I can't wait to see them.

I personally use Mydramalist.com to keep track of my current dramas and what I have watched.  I've watched over 70 dramas and 42 movies since I discovered these.  Currently I am watching 7 currently airing shows.  For newer shows I've loved:

High School King of Savvy--not for everyone.

Marriage not Dating--again not for kids because it's all about relationships.

Fated to Love You--a remake of a drama from Taiwan and may have some triggers

High School, Love on--very cute, appropriate for younger audiences and since the lead girl is only 14 and the lead actors are in their early 20s (from the group Infinite), we probably won't get more than a hug.

I'm also watching King 2 Hearts which is a really good one.  But older and staring Lee Seung Gi who is also in Gu Family Book and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

My top dramas of all time:

Cruel or Heartless City--Jung Kyung Ho is awesome in it but it is not for children.  It deals with undercover cops and gangsters and is a noir drama.

Swallow the Sun--Ji Sung at his best.  And kids could probably watch it but they may get bored since it deals with casinos.

Shut Up Flower Boy Band--kid friendly and I totally with Eye Candy was a real band.

Missing You--Eun Hye and YooChun do such a good job but it is full of triggers.  The younger cast did a great job with some really nasty scenes.  This one made me cry so much.

Secret Love--Again Ji Sung doing the bad boy thing so well and Hwang Jung Eum playing the poor pitiful victim so well (it's like all she does is go to prison in her dramas)  but not for kids.

I Hear Your Voice--So good.  Bo Young and Jung Suk do a great job but it is a bit of a darker one.

Gaksital or Bridal Mask is also an awesome one about the Japanese occupation.

I typed too much--Sorry.

Don't worry, you aren't alone in your addiction.   :thumbup1:

I just finished watching White Christmas, and Oh My Gosh! it was amazing!!  I didn't want it to end.  I watched it here, for those who want to look for it.  Only bad thing about that site, though, is that the episodes are in parts.  The good thing is that the episodes are just about HD quality and have good subs.

I adored King of High School.  I thought it was just the cutest thing, and I could not get enough of Seo In Guk.  Gah! but that man is good looking, and I think he is a great actor and singer.  Loved him Answer Me 1997 along with Jung Eun Ji (love her in Trot Lover's, too).

On a side note... I loved the masters sun but didn't really find So Ji Sub all that cool until....
I found out he's a rapper.
Then he gained cool points. And I bought 2 of his new songs.
I love rap. And inevitably, my favorite band members are the rappers.
And of course, my ultimate bias is a rapper. And just about everything else possible in the music industry. Not an actor, though. :) (Gdragon. And I'm linking the whole stinking m/v to my favorite song lol....
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/434386326531510414/ )

I love Gdragon, TOP, and Big Bang in general.  My other favorite rapper is Zico from BlockB, and I am really starting to like Kim Si Young from History.  Speaking of Gdragon's Crooked, if you aren't watching Surplus Princess (The Mermaid), (why aren't you? 'cause it is hilarious!!!!), then you should at least check out episode 4 because they do a parody of Crooked.  I about died from laughing when that came on!

OK, that does it for this batch, now on to the next.   :tongue_smilie:

Ok, so I have seen the Taiwanese version of Fated to Love You and liked it, so I was excited about the Korean version.  I watched about 15-20 mins of  the first episode and turned it off...I just can't get past how over the top the male lead was.  Does it get better?

If you can, please try and keep going.  It really is a great drama.

Yes.  I have a playlist with all my favorite songs from my favorite dramas.  And I also have stuff from FT Island, CNBLUE and some anime songs I really like.

I like watching currently airing dramas because it gives me better pacing and I'm less likely to abandon the family and go on a drama binge.  The two weeks I spent watching Empress Ki was probably hard on the family but I just couldn't stop watching or thinking about the show it was so good.

I LOVE FT Island.  They are my ultimate bias group, and Hong Ki is my ultimate bias.  I have almost all their albums, mini albums, and singles, both Korean and Japanese.  They have a new Japanese single coming out October 15 with all self composed songs.  Still waiting for the Korean comeback.  They've finished recording for it, but I don't see them releasing it until some time next year. :/  Their schedule is just so busy.  Hong Ki recently finished up performing in a musical in Japan, and just started filming a new drama due to start in October called Modern Farmer.  Loved Bride of the Century, so I can't wait to see him in the male lead again.

I agree that watching currently airing dramas helps with pacing, but there are so many completed ones to watch while waiting for the currents that I still end up marathoning some anyway. LOL  I want to see Empress Ki, but the 51 episodes is a bit daunting.  I want to see Hotel King, too, but it has 32 episodes!

I'm watching 9 current dramas...    :leaving:

I havent seen either of the shows, but took a peak at wikipedia to see what Great Doctor was about and sounded to me like similarities with Outlander??

The only similarities is that she is a doctor (Claire, in Outlander, is a combat nurse, but she eventually becomes a doctor), and time travel.  Well, and being held against your will.

Ladies, check out the first episode of Three Musketeers! It got great reviews and I loved it. :)

I saw it, and I wish it aired two episodes a week instead of just one.  If it keeps being this good, I'm going to hate that it's only 12 episodes long.  I wish High School: Love On, Surplus Princess, and What's With This Family aired two a week, too.  I've gotten so used to getting my fix twice a week, these airing only one are killing me.  LOL

I hope they don't mess it up.  There was a Boys Before Flowers done here, and it was terrible!

I just finished Rooftop Prince and have started The King of Dramas.  I may be becoming a KDA.

Rooftop Prince was the first drama to make me cry.  I loved the OTP so much!!!

I just finished that one.  It was so good.  I already miss it.  I loved the music in that one and I think I downloaded all the songs.  But I have Nine Plus Boys to look forward to now.  It's the next drama after Married, Not Dating.  Hopefully, it'll be another cute one.

I liked the music from Marriage, Not Dating, too, but I think the OST from It's Okay, It's Love is better.

I watched the first episode of Nine Plus Boys this morning, and it looks like it is going to be a good one.  I just checked on DramaFire.com and episode 2 is up, along with the next episode of What's With This Family.  Yes!

It's Okay, That's Love is KILLING me with how good it is!!!

Ahhhh!!! SO.GOOD.

It is so good!!!  Speaking of It's Okay, It's Love, does anyone else want to ball their eyes out when D.O comes on the screen?  I think he is doing a very good job with his first acting gig.

Anyone watching Discovery of Romance? It's pretty good, too. :)

Yes, I'm watching, and I don't even care if it's good or not.  I am only watching for Sung Joon.  If he decided to sit for an hour and read out of the phone book, I'd watch it.  I just love his voice.

[edited to remove picture]

He isn't too bad looking either.  I fell for him in Shut Up! Flower Boy Band.  I watched I Need Romance 3 for him.  Um, yeah.  Can I have a noona romance?  LOL  No, not really, but dang.  If the show ends up being good, that will just be a bonus.   :D

My friend is recapping it and I've watched the first episode but I got distracted by My Secret Hotel.  It's a pretty interesting story and Jin Yi Han is in it.

My Secret Hotel seems like it is going to be a great one, too.  I'm shipping Nam Sang Hyo (Yoo In Na, one of fave actresses) with Jo Sung Gyeom (Nam Goong Min) right now, but that may change if they would ever put the OTP together in more than just flashbacks.  This is the first thing I've seen Jin Yi Han in.  I really need to watch Empress Ki.

The food gets me everytime!!! It looks SO good and makes me so hungry.

Oh, I know.  I want to learn how to cook some of that.  There's a Korean restaurant not far from my house, and I got some really good bulgogi last weekend.  Mmm.. masisseoyo (맛있어요)!

Just made friends with you AmicusRose--that is if you have Lee Hong Ki as your profile pic.

Yes, that's me!  I LOVE Hong Ki!!   :001_wub:

Got herself a Crown Prince, huh?   :tongue_smilie:  I really enjoy her acting.  I've liked all that I've seen her in.

I don't understand how you can have K-Pop without IU, personally  :p.

I don't know why it is, but I have not found a girl group, or singer, that I especially like.  I have tons of guy groups I like listening to, but no girls.  I've tried listening to IU, f(x), SNSD, and others, but I just don't care for them.  I did like IU's MV for You and I, but that was because Lee Hyun Woo was in it.   :D   The song was nice, too, but not something I just had to have on my mp3 player.  Maybe I should try watching some of the variety shows with girl groups.
