jenniferlee
The last blender I bought was $30 at walmart. I hate it. I'm willing to spend a little more, like up to a $100? Does anyone have a blender they love and can recommend that isn't a vitamix or whatever? Jen
Mabeline
My Oster lasted me a long time. You can even use mason jars on the base.
Ellie
I was just going to recommend an Oster. :-)

bobbeym
I love my Ninja blender. I got mine at Sam's Club and it came with 3 different sizes of pitchers. Target has this version on sale for $89 right now. If you shop around you'll find a variety of styles of the Ninja and a variety of prices. Lara in Colo
I would recommend a Ninja or an oster--- depending on where you live, Osters are at the Thrift store all the time. I think the older ones are better-- even though I just bought a Vitamix, I refuse to get rid of my 30+ year old oster.
Belacqua
Another vote for Ninja. My only quibble with mine is that the cord is a bit short.
Blessed Mommy
Ninja! I got mine for Christmas last year from my parents. I LOVE it! I use it everyday, and it works just as well now as it did the first time I used it!
Stacia
Ninja. Bed Bath & Beyond has them too, so you can use their 20% off coupon for it.

I have an Oster. I think the motor power is the main difference. Ninjas are less expensive than Vitamix but have similar capacity.
Susan C.
I hate my Oster. So I got a Blendtec on sale at Christmas. There is no way that Oster (it is newer) could do vegetable smoothies. It is LOUD, it doesn't stay in place, and underneath, there are plastic shavings where it rubs. Also the plastic deal that screws into the jar is cracked. HappyLady
I have a Ninja Master Prep. I know technically it's a food processor, but I have to say I love it more than my Vitamix. I've chopped veggies, nuts, etc, as well as made smoothies and dressings in it and I just love it. It's so much easier to get the food out and to clean than the Vitamix. mommyto4
We have a Kitchen Aid blender ( I think it was about $100), and we really like it. It is very loud, but it works so well for fruit smoothies and blending soups.
Forget-Me-Not
We have a kitchen aid too. A Diamond maybe? It retails about $150 but we got it cheaper with a Kohls sale/coupon. It works really well.
KungFuPanda
Another happy Kitchenaid user. I spent about $90 three years ago.
Mrs Mungo
I have a Ninja. I had previously owned an Oster and a Kitchenaid. The Ninja was a gift from my mom a couple of years ago because I make smoothies for my kids almost daily. It does a much better job of that than my previous blenders. ThatHomeschoolDad
I got a refurb Waring bar blender with a glass jar off eBay. It's a tank. One switch, two speeds, no fuss.
Ellie
I've looked at the Vitamix for years, but I have the blender that came with my Bosch, and it does everything I actually need it to do. Before that I had a commercial Oster, which I bought at a fair, and that worked well, also. OTOH, I don't do things like make smoothies or crush ice into snow, so there you have it. :-) Just for fun, I think I"ll look for the Brevill Hemisphere. Never heard of it before. WishboneDawn
I have an Iona from thrift store that must be 35 or 40 years old. All my favorite small appliances come from thrift stores.
jenniferlee
Thanks! I'll look for the Ninja for sure. I've never even heard of it :) I don't get out much... Jen
AngieW in Texas
My first Ninja lasted for three years. I make a frozen fruit smoothie every day and one of the summers I made snow for snowcones almost every day and another of the summers I made milkshakes almost every day using the Hillbilly Housewife recipe (crushed ice and milk, no ice cream). I'm on my second Ninja now after the motor finally gave out on my first. This is the one that I bought both times, although I got mine at a discount at Kohl's. http://www.amazon.com/Ninja-Professional-Blender-Chopper-Crusher/dp/B003O47MKA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1388688315&sr=8-3&keywords=ninja+master+prep
Alte Veste Academy
How does the Ninja handle raw kale?
Belacqua
How does the Ninja handle raw kale? I've found that it does a pretty good job with kale. There will still be recognizable green bits, but nothing unmanageable. I do remove the kale ribs, though... I doubt they'd be adequately pureed.
AngieW in Texas
I strip the leaves of the big kale ribs, although there are plenty of skinny kale ribs left. I always put about 2 cups of kale in each of my smoothies. It does take a little longer to make a smoothie with kale than it does to make a smoothie without kale, but it works very well. When my 18yo is home from college, I make the same smoothie for her each night that I do for myself, except that I don't add kale to hers. I pulse the blender about twice as long for my smoothie with kale as I do for her smoothie without kale.
blondeviolin
I also have the Ninja love. Mine is the basic, basic set and I have no need for a more expensive set. I would love some more small bowls...

school17777
Well, stink. I never cared that mic about having a blender, even for free. But you MADE ME LOOK at the Vitamix and now I lust after a blender that cooks the soup as you blend it. WOW It is pretty cool! Although I don't make soup in there very much any more. That was one of the things that sold me on a Vitamix. The demonstrator pointed out that you could have a hot soup in 10 minutes total time after being gone from home all day, coming back from picking up kids. Since that happens all the time here, I was sold.
Mrs Mungo
I have this Ninja: http://mobile.walmart.com/m/phoenix#ip/Ninja-XL-Master-Prep-Professional-Blender-NJ600/15436117 I haven't tried to incorporate anything like a carrot into a smoothie, but looks like there are a lot of Ninja green smoothie youtube videos that might give you a good clue as to the capability? coralloyd
I make a smoothie everyday in my Ninja. I put kale with stalk and all in it, and it blends great! I do have the one that came with the single serving cups and that is what I make my smoothies in. It is done in seconds.
mamaraby
I can't afford a Ninja, either. When I buy a new blender I'm going to get the one mentioned here - http://www.thisishappystuff.com/?p=3380
Alia_in_FL
I read somewhere that Consumer Reports rates a Ninja as well as a Vitamix. I haven't read the article, and I have a Vitamix. You can join BJ's through Groupon for $35 and you will get a $25 gift cert back (I just did this yesterday, that's now I know). I own a Vitamix and have subscription to Consumer Reports and I read that as well, that the Ninja ranks right up there with the Vitamix.
