Best men's socks and thermal wear for working long hours in the cold?

For socks, I would look for smartwool. I've gotten mine at LLBean sales, but my neighbor found some at Costco last year.

DH often has to stand out in the cold, sometimes overnight for his job and we always buy him thermals made out of polypropylene. It keeps the moisture away from his body and doesn't make him as cold as cotton would. And as far as socks go, we just go with wool socks and good waterproof boots. 

We have bought from places like walmart and amazon (cheap) to places like REI ($$$) and haven't seen a huge difference in socks and thermals. And, I know you didnt ask, but as far as boots go, we spend as much as we can afford.

For socks, I don't think you can beat a good wool sock, though some folks prefer the wool/silk blends like these

For the thermal underwear, this is a case where two medium layers will keep you warmer than one heavy one.  Plus you can adjust easier if you get hot.  These are AMAZING warm wool-blend

Under armor is my dh's favorite but they are not cheap. They are not bulky but they are hard to get into. Kind of like a skin diving suit. I laugh at my dh when he's squirming into them. I tell him that's what pantyhose are like.  I've also discovered the joy of insulated coveralls. They are bulky, but SOOO warm. They make this cloud of warm air around your body.  So if bulk is no big deal, insulated coveralls over pants over underarmor and he will be toasty.  Insulated lace up boots are great too.

Carhartt thermal lined pants or jeans with a base layer. I love the thick smartwool socks...SAMs clubs carry them for $13 a pair. my hubby was given two set of thermals by the military..one is thinner and then he adds a waffle layer when it is cold like today-33.
