Amethyst
Can anyone recommend a good nonfiction book about Yugoslavia for my ds21? TIA
Laura Corin
Just in case it might help anyone: are you looking for something about Yugoslavia when it was a country, or something about the modern-day countries that Yugoslavia has been divided into? Any particular historical period? L
Alessandra
Fiction, not nonfiction, but Ivo Andric is a marvelous Bosnian writer, Nobel Prize winner. Most of his books are about Bosnia under the Ottomans. Bridge on the Drina is especially well known, encompasses lots of history. Not exactly what you are looking for, but Andric is so wonderful that I couldn't resist. Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, by Rebecca West, is a classic travel/history, well written, but it was written about 60 years ago.

Amethyst
Anyone familiar with this book called Balkan Ghosts? It says it was a Best Book of the Year by the New York Times (presumably in 2005 when it came out).
Ripley
My ex-husband is from (former) Yugoslavia. He doesn't read about it, so I asked his sister. She's a professor, and her university sponsors an annual summer language intensive where she also teaches her language and culture. She says it's hard to come by anything unbiased, but the two she suggests her students read are: Balkan Tragedy by Susan Woodward and The Fall of Yugoslavia by Misha Glenny. She's an academic. I'm not sure if those are "heavy" reading, but it's something to get you started on finding a book that will work for your son!
